An Election Held Hostage?

The Fund for New Priorities in America sponsored a forum entitled, "An Election Held Hostage and the October Surprise: What Really Happened," to discuss recent allegations that advisers from the 1980 Reagan presidential campaign cut a deal with Iran to delay the release of the American hostages until after the election in exchange for arms. Panel members included Gary Sick, a former member of the National Security Council who has raised awareness of the issue through editorials and media appearances. A letter signed by eight of the former hostages in Iran requesting a congressional investigation into the involvement of the Reagan campaign was circulated through the House of Representatives and the Senate. Sen. Wellstone expressed his support for a full investigation into the matter by a congressional committee.

Book Discussion on [My Turn To Speak]

Brassey's U.S., Inc., a public affairs/public policy publishing company, sponsored a news conference by Abol Hassan Bani-Sadr to publicize the publication of his book, My Turn To Speak: Iran, the Revolution, and Secret Deals with the U.S.. President Bani-Sadr, who had been president of Iran following the Iranian revolution, gave a brief announcement on his book which his translator read to the audience, and then answered reporters' questions through his translator. He indicated that he wanted the media to cover more about his book than only the hostage issue, but rather the entire scope of the book which includes inside information on the Iranian revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini, and the politics of the Middle East. The book itself has raised questions concerning the role of Ronald Reagan's campaign staff and then Vice Presidential candidate George Bush in the release of American hostages from Iran in 1981. President Bush has continually denied involvement in negotiations concerning the release of the hostages. President Bani-Sadr said he did not know whether President Bush had been involved in the negotiations.

Political Situation in Iran

Mr. Jafarzadeh spoke to the National Press Club on political issues in Iran and the Middle East. He is a spokesman for the People's Mojahedin of Iran, also known as the National Liberation Army, an opposition group to the current Iranian administration. The People's Mojahedin are dedicated to "democratic Islam," and train with tanks and equipment supplied by Iraq. Mr. Jafarzadeh criticized the "moderate" reforms by the administration in Iran, saying internal oppression and international terrorism continue to be practiced by the Iranian government. He said the Iran had announced in internal government discussions that the American hostages being held in Lebanon were not to be released, and were being held as a political trump card for Iran. The Iranian government, Mr. Jafarzadeh claimed, actually held control over the release of the hostages, not a political group in Lebanon as announced by an Iranian spokesman. He went on to describe the totalitarian principles practiced by the government in Iran. A short promotional video on the People's Mojahedin, or the National Liberation Army of Iran, was shown during the question and answer period following the remarks of the speaker.

October Surprise

The House Rules Committee met to begin the first of two hearings concerning the investigation into the October Surprise. That refers to the allegations that the 1980 Ronald Reagan Campaign made a deal with the Iranian government to delay the release of the 52 American hostages that were being held at the U.S. embassy in Tehran until after Mr. Reagan's January, 1991 inauguration. Recently, the House leadership agreed to set up a task force to look into those allegations. The hearing focused on the mechanics of setting up a group that will investigate the allegations.

Iran Hostage Deal Allegations

Mr. Michel answered questions regarding the proposed House and Senate investigations of allegations that the 1980 hostages in Iran were released the same day as President Reagan's inauguration. The inquiry involves a charge that the Reagan/Bush campaign staff negotiated with Iranian officials to postpone a hostage release until Reagan had been elected and inaugurated. Mr. Foley continued by explaining his position on why he felt the investigation was necessary and the need to put the matter to rest for the American public. He mentioned that if the investigation were purely political he would have started it much earlier, but that it was necessary to investigate the matter to come to a final conclusion about the issue.

October Surprise Markup

The House Administration committee met to discuss proposed legislation that would create a task force to look into the alleged involvement of the 1980 Reagan presidential campaign in negotiations to delay the release of American hostages in Iran until after the November election. The proposed task force would be made up of members of the House Foreign Affairs committee. Members of the committee argued over whether there was sufficient evidence to justify the expense of a task force on the matter, and whether the conclusions determined by such a task force, favorable or unfavorable to the historical image of the Reagan administration, would again justify the expense of a House investigation.
