      <title>After Words with Jeremy Scahill</title>
      <description>Investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill talked about his book, [Blackwater: The Rise of The World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army], published by Nation Books. He described Blackwater U.S.A., a private company that has provided military assistance to the U.S. government. Mr. Scahill recounted the development of this corporation and analyzed its current involvement in U.S. national and foreign affairs. The guest interviewer was David Martin.
 
 Jeremy Scahill is a frequent contributor to [The Nation] magazine and a correspondent for the national radio program "Democracy Now!." He is currently a Fellow at [The Nation] Institute. David Martin has been CBS News' national security correspondent since 1993. As well as appearing on the "CBS Evening News" he has been a contributor to "60 Minutes" and "48 Hours."</description>

      <title>Homosexuals in the Military</title>
      <description>Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Colin Powell spoke on "National Security in a Changing World," on the American University campus. General Powell focused on the challenges to national security in a post-Cold War world. Gen. Powell also spoke on the issue of a ban on homosexuals in the military. He said that while an end of the ban would not cause "mass resignations" in the military, he was pleased President-elect Clinton would consult with him and other military leaders prior to ending the ban. He also said he would execute the instructions of the president and Congress when a decision on the matter was handed down. Following his prepared remarks, Gen. Powell responded to questions from members of the audience.</description>

She explained how, in 1960, the Defense Department secretly assembled a group of scientific scholars to help the U.S. military problem-solve defense, science, and technology matters. They were called "the Jasons."  After her presentation she answered audience members' questions.

      <title>Military Draft</title>
      <description>The Center for American Progress hosted a discussion on whether a military draft was necessary to meet overseas military commitments. An article in the [Washington Monthly] had argued that an all-volunteer army was no longer sufficient to maintain military readiness and operational demands placed on troops serving either in combat zones or peace keeping missions. 
 
 Phillip Carter, a lawyer and former Army captain who writes for [Washington Monthly], argued for the draft. Lawrence Korb, senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, spoke against the draft. Columnist Mark Shields moderated the discussion.</description>

      <title>Unified Command Structure</title>
      <description>Secretary Rumsfeld and General Myers spoke to reporters about a plan to reorganize the military in order to meet contemporary and future threats to national security. The plan included provisions to establish a U.S. Northern Command, responsible for the defense and protection of the U.S. homeland. They also talked about military operations in Afghanistan, saying that the failure to commit U.S. troops to operations in the Tora Bora region were a mistake because the decision allowed Osama bin Laden to escape the country. Following their remarks they answered questions from the reporters.
 
 After Secretary Rumsfeld and General Myers left the stage, Mr. Cambone and General Casey showed charts and continued answering reporters' questions.</description>
