Book Discussion on [Boyd: The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War]

Mr. Coram talked about his book [Boyd: The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War], published by Little, Brown and Company. The late Colonel John Boyd, United States Air Force, began his career as a supremely proficient fighter pilot in the Korean War, after which he went on to develop the concept of energy maneuvering that has been the basis for fighter tactics and designs for 30 years. He proceeded militantly to advocate simpler fighter designs and attracted a group of like-minded civilian and uniformed reformers. After his retirement, he developed strategic concepts based on the velocity of attack. On the personal front, Boyd, the product of a dysfunctional family, generated another, and his abrasive personality led him to have a turbulent career. Film clips were also shown.

Book Discussion on [One Second After]

William Forstchen talked about his novel [One Second After] (Forge Books; March 17, 2009). In his novel he depicts what America would be like after a high-altitude nuclear bomb explosion that sends out electromagnetic pulses (EMP) which permanently destroy all of the world's electrical systems. A military and technology historian, Mr. Forstchen talked about what led him the write the book, the threat of electromagnetic pulse attacks in the real world, and the need for a missile defense system to guard against such attacks. Other topics included hardening the electric grid and other protective measures, which would also be a protection against a solar event. He was interviewed on stage by Clifford May at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. Then experts in the audience joined the discussion.

William Forstchen is a faculty fellow and professor of history at Montreat College in North Carolina. His many books include [Gettysburg] and [Pearl Harbor], both co-authored with Newt Gingrich.

Rajiv Chandrasekaran talked about his [Washington Post] article, "Too Big to Bail," an examination of the embattled F-35 jet fighter program. He highlights the program's unique ability to avoid budget cuts despite increases in production costs and delayed project completion. He points out that the program will not receive spending reductions from the budget sequester process. He defines what opponents of the F-35 call "political engineering" which he describes as a process employed by defense contractors to spread production throughout as many states as possible. He says this is one of many reasons defense contractor Lockheed Martin gets continued funding for their advanced fighter jet for the Navy, Air Force and Marines.

Book Discussion on [Secret Soldiers]

Philip Gerard discussed his latest book, [Secret Soldiers: The Story of World War II's Heroic Army of Deception], published by Dutton. In it, Mr. Gerard writes about a once top-secret elite Army unit that used the tools of deception to save lives during World War II. He maintains that these men were not average soldiers. Their ranks included men such as designer Bill Blass, painter Ellsworth Kelly and a number of artists, engineers and musicians. Mr. Gerard outlines their mission as two-fold: to deceive the German Army into believing that the Allies possessed more troops than they actually did, and to draw enemy fire on their position in order to allow Allied troops to advance. There was a brief question-and-answer session following his presentation.
