He believes that without the existence of a liberal class there will no longer be checks and balances against corporate interests. Chris Hedges discussed his book at Powell's Books in Portland, Oregon.

Q&A with Miles Unger

Miles J. Unger was interviewed about his new biography on the life and writings of noted Italian author and playwright, Niccolo Machiavelli. The book details how Machiavelli became an infamous and influential political writer. Mr. Unger recounts how Machiavelli's name became synonymous with cynical scheming and the selfish pursuit of power. Despite this, Mr. Unger argues that Machiavelli was a deeply humane writer whose controversial theories were a response to the corruption he witnessed around him. He also speaks of his own time spent living in Florence, along with the roots of his deep interest in studying the Italian Renaissance.
Miles J. Unger has been a contributing writer to the [New York Times] for over ten years. He is the former managing editor of [Art New England]. His last book was [Magnifico: The Brilliant Life and Violent Times of Lorenzo de' Medici].

Q&A with Douglas Brinkley

Rice University History Professor Douglas Brinkley talked about his new biography of long-time CBS "Evening News" anchor Walter Cronkite, who was often referred to as "the most trusted man in America." [Cronkite] chronicles his early life in Missouri and Texas and his United Press wire service reporting from the front lines of World War II. He shared stories of Cronkite's rise through the ranks of CBS News, including the task of anchoring the 1952 political conventions and the expansion of the CBS Evening News from 15 to 30 minutes in 1963. Brinkley suggests that while Cronkite's Evening News broadcasts aimed for political objectivity, his radio commentaries were what he terms "left leaning." Brinkley describes Cronkite's retirement at age 65 from the nightly newscast and his subsequent regret in choosing Dan Rather as his replacement. Brinkley discussed his research methods, which included access to Cronkite's private papers and interviews with over 150 people.

Q&A with Robert Kagan

Robert Kagan discussed his book, [The World America Made], in which he asserts that the contemporary international world order was created almost entirely by American power and influence after World War II. He cautions that although the country is not in decline. the U.S. could take actions that might lead it to decline. He cites widespread democracy, the generally favorable economic climate, and the absence of war among great powers as examples of that strength. He talked about his 13 years at the Carnegie Endowment and his change to the Brookings Institution in 2010.
Robert Kagan is a graduate of Yale University and Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. He holds a Ph.D. in American history from the American University in Washington, D.C. He writes a monthly column for the [Washington Post], and is a contributing editor for the [Weekly Standard] and the [New Republic].

Thomas Mann and Norm Ornstein talked about their book, [It's Even Worse Than It Looks: How the American Constitutional System Collided with the New Politics of Extremism.] In the book they examined the adversarial partisan behavior of Washington, D.C., policy makers that has left a majority-rule system dysfunctional. They placed much of the blame on Republican Party ideological extremism. Mr. Ornstein said in the interview that Democrats were not lacking blame for the situation. However, he also said Democrats were willing to work with President George W. Bush despite the contentious 2000 election and the Supreme Court decision on [Gore v. Bush]. In contrast, he cited Robert Draper's book that told of tea party movement Republican leaders meeting the night of President Obama's inauguration and agreeing to oppose anything the president proposed.
Julie Andrews and her daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton, talked about their co-edited book, [Julie Andrews' Collection of Poems, Songs, and Lullabies] (Little, Brown Young Readers; October 1, 2009), illustrated by James McMullen. They selected classic poems, songs, and lullabies as well as poems written by the authors themselves and contributions from other family members. Julie Andrews introduced each of the nine themed sections with intimate stories and family memories. They also talked about their writing careers, both separately and as collaborators. They both have written children's books and Julie Andrews has also written a memoir. Topics included how they collaborate, the writing of books for children, poetry, literacy, and Emma Walton Hamilton's book [Raising Bookworms: Getting Kids Reading for Pleasure and Empowerment].

They were interviewed at BookExpo America 2009 in the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City, apparently on Friday, May 29, 2009.
