      <title>Situation in Kenya</title>
      <description>Mr. Swan and Mr. Gottlieb testified about the December 27, 2007 parliamentary elections in Kenya. When President Kibaki was announced as the winner, supporters of opposition leader Odinga objected, and violence ensued, including excessive force by police. There have been more than 1,000 deaths. Negotiations within the Kenyan government are under way, led by former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, although violence and displacement of citizens is continuing. Ms. Farrow, Chairman Kiai, and Ms. Ndungu testified about the humanitarian crisis resulting from the violence in Kenya, including the burning of homes and endangering of tens of thousands of citizens. UNICEF and other organizations are attempting to be of aid in the situation. They also described the history of ethnic strife in Kenya and suggested reforms in the Kenyan government.</description>

      <title>Book Discussion on [Histories of the Hanged:  Kenya and the End of Empire]</title>
      <description>Mr. Anderson talked about his new book [Histories of the Hanged: The Dirty War in Kenya and the End of Empire,] published by W.W. Norton. He described the Mau Mau uprising in the 1950s which ultimately led to the end of British colonial rule in Kenya. He documented the economic and cultural discrimination that led to the Kikuyu people rebelling against the British. After his presentation he answered audience members' questions. 
 
 Anderson previously served as the director of the Center for African Studies at the University of London.</description>

      <description>A ceremony was held to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the bombings of the U.S. embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. The ceremony included music and an honor guard from the Military District of Washington. Father Mark Moretti made the invocation and benediction. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer made remarks. State Department employees Dudley Sims and Hamzaali Girnary reflected on the events.</description>

      <description>David Ngaruri Kenney , author of [Asylum Denied: A Refugee's Struggle for Safety in America], talked about his experiences as a political refugee seeking asylum in the United States. Kenney came to the United States from Kenya on a basketball scholarship after being arrested, imprisoned and tortured in Kenya for civil disobedience. After college, he unsuccessfully sought asylum in the U.S. and was deported, despite being married to an American woman. Kenney proceeded to successfully regain asylum status in the U.S. after a lengthy legal, procedural, and bureaucratic battle with agencies of the U.S. government, with the help of his lawyer, Philip Schrag. He responded to telephone calls and electronic mail.</description>

She was interviewed on stage about her life and the work she did that led to her being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. In 1977, defying political pressure, Wangari Maathai established the Green Belt Movement to provide both an income to rural African women and to save the indigenous forest of her home land. Thirty years later, millions of trees have been planted across Africa by these women.</description>
