Transition Toward Democracy in Angola

The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola held a press conference to announce the formation of a multi-party democracy in Angola, and the signing of peace accords on May 31 in Lisbon, Spain. Signers of the agreement include representatives of the People's Republic of Angola and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola. Topics discussed in the news conference include UNITA's input to the peace process, a "road map" to the peace accords in Lisbon, and plans for Angola's future as envisioned by UNITA. Mr. Muekalia said bipartisan U.S. assistance to the democracy movement in Angola isolated the opposition party and forced them to come to terms on the negotiating table after thousands of deaths in the civil war. He went over recent events in Angola and around the world that mark the end of the civil war, include the cease-fire beginning May 15, 1991.

State Department News Briefing

Ms. Tutwiler briefed reporters on recent events in the State Department. Specifically, she announced that the last Cuban troops will leave Angola on May 25, ending thirty years of Cuban military intervention in Africa. She also discussed Secretary of State James Baker's recent trips to the Middle East. In recent hearings before the Senate Appropriations subcommittee on foreign operations, Secretary Baker criticized Israel for continuing to build settlements in the occupied zones and thus discouraging efforts to organize Arab-Israeli peace talks. Other issues brought up include conflict between Lebanon and Syria, and the continuing civil war in Ethiopia.
