      <title>Early Childhood Education Funding</title>
      <description>The National Institute for Early Education Research announced the results of its annual report on early childhood education funding and quality. The findings showed that funding cuts at the state level resulted in a ten-year low point in support for early childhood education and that state funding for the 2011-2012 school year decreased by $500 million. Secretaries Arne Duncan and Kathleen Sebelius addressed the group on President Obama's commitment to make pre-kindergarten education more widely available.</description>

      <description>Erin Gruwell delivered the commencement address at Bay Path College. She gained fame from her work with the extremely under-privileged in Long Beach, CA. She made her students write stories about themselves, focusing on their perspectives of literature and the greater society around them. Her unconventional methods led to the movie [Freedom Writers]. She talked about her experiences in teaching these students and the stories that the students had from growing up in poverty.
 
 Prior to delivering her speech, she was awarded an honorary doctorate.</description>

      <title>First Amendment and Children</title>
      <description>The Association of American Law Schools Section on Mass Communication Law hosted a panel discussion on "Sex, Thugs and Lock 'n' Load: Minors and the Regulation of Expression."  Scholars discussed indecency, censorship, and violence in the media and electronic games. They presented a video showing violence in the video game "Grand Theft Auto" and used charts and graphs. The panelists correlated the influence of violence on everyday life for children with the risk of lung cancer from secondhand smoke. They said that child protection censorship depends on allowing the censorship and maintaining tolerable limits. Following their discussion, the panelists responded to questions and comments from members of the audience. Professor Peltz moderated the panel.</description>
