      <title>Book Discussion on [Supreme Discomfort]</title>
      <description>The co-authors were interviewed by Professor Ogletree about their book, [Supreme Discomfort: The Divided Soul of Clarence Thomas], published by Doubleday. They talked about their reasons for writing the book, including considerable differences of opinion about Justice Thomas among blacks. They described his childhood in rural Georgia, his education at Holy Cross and Yale, his contentious Supreme Court appointment, and his subsequent service on the U.S. Supreme Court. The authors described Justice Thomas as a man who is uncomfortable in white society and not accepted by many blacks because of his political views. After their presentations the authors responded to audience members' questions.</description>

      <description>Professor Holzer talked about his book, [Supreme Court Opinions of Clarence Thomas, 1991-2006: A Conservative's Perspective], published by McFarland and Company. He defended the record and character of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas against what he terms unfair portrayals of him in the media. He analyzed many of Justice Thomas's nearly 350 Supreme Court opinions and concluded that Justice Thomas is a formidable intellectual who is deeply committed to the Constitution and its principles of federalism, separation of powers, limited judicial review, and regard for individual rights. After his presentation Professor Holzer responded to audience members' questions.</description>

      <description>As part of Columbia University's "Black Thought in Progress," Judge Higginbotham criticized many of Justice Clarence Thomas's Supreme Court decisions. Judge Higginbotham was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals, Third Circuit, by President Carter in 1977. In an interview, Mr. Smith, a clerk for Justice Thomas during the 1993 term, disagreed with much of the material in Judge Higginbotham's speech.</description>

      <description>Mr. Foskett talked about his book [Judging Thomas:  The Life and Times of Clarence Thomas], published by William Morrow. He based his biography of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas on interviews he conducted with Justice Thomas, along with other Supreme Court justices, family members, and friends of Justice Thomas. Mr. Foskett traced the roots of Justice Thomas's willingness to challenge expectations to his upbringing in Savannah, and found the origins of his conservative politics in his disillusionment with the Black Power movement and Affirmative Action in the mid 1970s. Mr. Foskett went on to discuss Clarence Thomas's time on the Supreme Court in light of the controversy surrounding his confirmation and accusations of sexual misconduct. Following his remarks, Mr. Foskett responded to audience questions.</description>
