 Tabitha King read from [Candles Burning], a book started by the late Michael McDowell. Owen King read from a short story about a meerkat superhero. Stephen King read from a novel in progress to be called [Under the Dome].

      <title>Abel Berland Rare Book Library Sale</title>
      <description>Portions of the auction of 18 rare books were shown, including a world auction record set for a work by William Shakespeare. Also sold were James Boswell's [Life of Samuel Johnson], William Blake's [Songs of Innocence], Rene Descartes' [Discours], Thomas Hobbes' [Leviathan], and others. 
 
 Video clips were shown of an October 3 speech by Mr. Basbanes about the Abel Berland library. Mr. Basbanes and Mr. Wahlgren were interviewed about these 18 items, interspersed with scenes from the auction of each one. Many of the auction participants were interviewed about the items and prices. 
 
 Over the course of 40 years Abel Berland, a Chicago real estate consultant, had collected a library of rare editions of 500 of the most well-known works of English literature and other areas.</description>

      <description>A medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters was bestowed on novelist Philip Roth. The master of ceremonies was comedian, actor, and writer Steve Martin. The chair of each genre panel presented the award to each winner. Julia Glass received the Fiction award for [Three Junes.] published by Pantheon Books. Ruth Stone received the Poetry award for [In the Next Galaxy,] published by Copper Canyon Press. Nancy Farmer received the Young People's Literature award for [The House of the Scorpion,] published by Antheneum Books for Young Readers Robert A. Caro received the Nonfiction prize for [Master of the Senate: The Years of Lyndon Johnson,] published by Knopf. The National Book Awards are sponsored by a consortium of book publishing groups to recognize American writers in the genres of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and young people's literature.</description>

      <title>Random House 75th Anniversary</title>
      <description>Random House author William Styron and editor Robert Loomis were interviewed about their work, their friendship, and their history with the publishing house. The pair shared stories about Random House founders Bennett Cerf and Donald Klopfer, authors William Faulkner and William Saroyan, and the books [Ulysses] and [Lolita]. They talked about Mr. Styron's experience suffering from severe depression and the memoir that grew out of it. Mr. Styron and Mr. Loomis have known each other since the late 1940s when both attended Duke University. 
 
 Ann Godoff was also interviewed.
 
 William Styron is the author of nine books, including [The Confessions of Nat Turner,] [Sophie's Choice,] and [Darkness Visible.]  He has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the National Medal of Arts. 
 Robert Loomis is vice president and executive editor of Random House Trade Publishing Group. He joined Random House in 1957. 
 
 Mr. Loomis has edited the work of numerous authors, including Shelby Foote, Daniel Boorstin, Maya Angelou, Seymour Hersh, Woody Allen, Edmund Morris, and Terry Southern. He was awarded the Roger Klein Award for Creative Editing in 1977. 
 
 Ann Godoff is president, publisher, and editor-in-chief of Random House Trade Publishing Group, which includes Random House, Villard, and Modern Library. She is also executive vice president of Random House, Inc. Before coming to Random House in 1991, Ms. Godoff held positions as senior editor and editor-in-chief at Atlantic Monthly Press. In her role as an editor, she has worked with Salman Rushdie, Carl Sagan, Caleb Carr, John Berendt, Tina Rosenberg, and Nathan McCall.</description>

Working with the Comcast Cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on BookTV on C-SPAN2.</description>

      <title>USA Patriot Act</title>
      <description>Mr. Finan, president of the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE), talked about the USA PATRIOT Act and its impact on the bookselling industry. Section 215 of the Act gives federal authorities investigating terrorism the power to obtain customer information (including sales records) from bookstores and libraries. The ABFEE has joined a number of other free expression groups in denouncing the PATRIOT Act. Mr. Finan also discussed his new biography of four-time New York Governor Alfred Smith and some of the other projects ABFFE is involved in.</description>

C-SPAN's Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their "2013 LCV Cities Tour" in Raleigh, North Carolina, from May 13-17 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Time Warner Cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on BookTV on C-SPAN2.</description>

      <title>Editing Children's Books</title>
      <description>As part of the society's thirtieth annual conference, Ms. Lamb, who is also vice president of Random House's Children's Trade Book Group, talked about the role of the editor in the writing process. She suggested that the relationship between author and editor is a collaborative one and believes the editor's job is to understand the author's vision without influencing it. In addition, the editor should consider the work from the point of view of the intended audience. Ms. Lamb described the editor's job as dependent on the author, including the roles of motivator and therapist.</description>

      <description>Betsey Burton talked about her book [The King's English:  Adventures of an Independent Bookseller], published by Gibbs-Smith Publishers. The book examined the struggles and satisfactions of being an independent bookseller in a time when their business was increasingly threatened by big discounters and online bargains. She was the founder and owner of The King's English Bookstore in Salt Lake City, a small bookstore that she has kept running for nearly 30 years. She also publishes the [Inkslinger], a regular publication consisting of book reviews and author interviews. Ms. Burton also read revealing lists from some of America's top independent booksellers and answered questions from members of the audience.</description>
