Texas Cult Standoff

Attorney General Janet Reno spoke in a news conference to reporters on the events of the day in Waco, Texas, where increased pressure by the FBI to end the siege of an armed religious cult ended in the fiery death of all but 10 of the approximately 90 cult members. The FBI had started poking holes in the cult's compound with a battering ram and filling the house with tear gas when an apparently deliberately set fire broke out in the cult's house. Attorney General Reno said she had made the decision to increase pressure on the cult, and said she had advised the president of the general plan but had not filled him in on the details.

Texas Cult Standoff Part 1

The committee heard testimony from the attorney general on the actions of the government concerning the siege of an armed religious cult near Waco, Texas last month. The government's siege of the cult, originally raided for federal weapons violations, ended after 51 days when the cult's compound burnt to the ground after the FBI attempted to pressure the cult to surrender by the use of tear gas. Some members of the committee questioned Attorney General Reno intensely on the decision-making process that led to the FBI's use of force against the cult.

Waco Investigation Day 1 Part 1

The joint subcommittees are investigating the failed February 28, 1993 Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Bureau raid on the Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Texas in which four ATF agents were killed. Also under investigation is the April 19 FBI raid on the compound with tanks and tear gas and the resultant fire in which 80 cult members died, including their leader David Koresh. Following opening statements by subcommittee members and a CNN video clip of the April 19 fire at the compound, two authors whose books severely criticized the ATF and the Treasury Department actions in the raids testified. Democrats complained that Republican subcommittee members used the National Rifle Association to help them prepare for the hearings.

Texas Cult Standoff

Mr. Ricks, Dr. Daney and Mayor Shehe spoke in a news conference to reporters after the FBI's siege of an armed religious cult in Waco ended earlier in the day when the cult's compound burnt to the ground. Fewer than ten of approximately ninety cult members survived the blaze, which broke out in the cult's house after the FBI battered the house with a tank and sprayed the house with tear gas, attempting to force the cult members out of the compound where they had been holed up since late February. Mr. Ricks said the blaze appeared to have been a suicidal move by the cult, because the fire broke out in three places at once and was unrelated to the presence of tear gas in the house. Mayor Shehe read a statement on the end of the cult standoff, and Dr. Daney summarized the medical condition of the survivors.

Mr. Limbaugh appeared on "The Sean Hannity Show" to discuss his book [Absolute Power: The Legacy of Corruption in the Clinton-Reno Justice Department], published by Regnery Publishing. Mr. Limbaugh responded to viewer calls during the program.

Texas Cult Standoff

President Clinton spoke to reporters in the Rose Garden on the administration's role in the events of the previous day, when the members of an armed religious sect in Waco, Texas, perished in a fire in their compound. The religious cult had been holed up in their compound since February, when Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms officials tried unsuccessfully to assault the cult's complex, where the cult had been accused of stockpiling illegal weapons. President Clinton said he was responsible for the decision to begin pressuring cult members to leave the compound by using tear gas and battering rams against their buildings, and expressed his sorrow at the tragic loss of life in the fire, apparently set by the cult members.

His organization has tracked approximately 800 groups in the U.S. ranging from militant tax protestors to domestic terrorists. He stated that the common belief in the militia movement is that there is a conspiracy to disarm U.S. citizens and turn the nation over to an evil international government. Following his prepared remarks, Mr. Dees took questions from the audience.

Texas Cult Standoff

The subcommittee heard testimony from Mr. Higgins and other representatives of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms on the bureau's actions regarding recent events near Waco, Texas. The bureau was one of the agencies involved in the siege of an armed religious cult suspected of hoarding illegal weapons and sexual abuse of children. On February 28, 1993, ATF agents swarmed the cult's compound, only to lose four agents in a hail of returned gunfire from the cult. The cult remained locked in its compound under siege from government agents until April 19th, when a fire allegedly set by the cult burned the compound to the ground, killing approximately 80 members.

Texas Cult Standoff Part 2

The subcommittee heard from the heads of the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms on the recent events near Waco, Texas. In late February 1993, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms assaulted the compound of an armed religious cult near Waco to arrest the cult's leader on federal firearms statute violations. The cult repulsed the raid with gunfire, and lay under siege from government agents for 51 days. On April 19, the cult's compound burned to the ground after the FBI began to pressure cult members to surrender with the use of tear gas. Mr. Sessions, Mr. Higgins and other representatives of the agencies testified on the government's decision making processes that led to the original raid as well as the pressure tactics on the cult's final day.

The FBI stormed the compound on April 19 and pumped tear gas into the main building, but the investigation and autopsies of some 85 victims showed that the cult members had set the fatal fire themselves and also shot or stabbed many of the victims.
