Operation Fast and Furious Report

Michael Horowitz testified on the findings in the Department of Justice Inspector General's report on the FBI's "Fast and Furious" operation. He described a series of missteps and failures that led to the use of gun walking during two arms smuggling investigations. He said Attorney General Eric Holder first learned about the tactic from Congress, noting that other Justice Department officials either failed to recognize warning signs or did not share information when they should have.
"Fast and Furious" was a government gun smuggling sting operation run by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives between 2009 and 2010 with the goal of bringing arms smuggling charges against Mexican drug cartel members. "Gun walking" was an investigative technique in which weapons were allowed to be smuggled across the Mexican border, with the intent of making arrests later.

FBI Informants

Trevor Aaronson talked about his recent [Mother Jones] cover story on the large network of informants used by the FBI in its efforts to prevent another domestic terrorist attack. He also responded to telephone calls and electronic communications. FBI informants identify disgruntled people living in the U.S. who express willingness to instigate an act of terrorism, and then provide them the means to carry out an attack. Mr. Aaronson argues that this method can sometimes be entrapment, and that many suspects would not have acted if not prodded by the FBI.
This program was part of a "Washington Journal" series highlighting recent magazine articles.

Q&A with Tim Weiner

Tim Weiner discussed [Enemies: A History of the FBI], his book on the FBI's 100-year hidden history of war against terrorists, spies, and ultimately any person or group deemed subversive. He revealed secretly taped conversations FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover had with Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon. He wrote about the agency's predominantly illegal secret intelligence and surveillance techniques such as wire-tapping, break-ins, and burglaries. He researched recently declassified documents that included Mr. Hoover's personal intelligence files. He scrutinized over 200 oral histories of current and former FBI agents.
In this interview Mr. Weiner discussed his early career as a reporter, including his [Kansas City Times]' coverage of the 1981 collapse of an atrium skywalk at the Hyatt Hotel, which won him and his team a Pulitzer Prize. His second Pulitzer was received for investigative journalism on black budget spending while employed by the [Philadelphia Inquirer].

Book Discussion on [Inside the FBI]

Ronald Kessler talked about his book [The FBI: Inside the World's Most Powerful Law Enforcement Agency], published by Pocket Books, which reveals details and activities of the FBI from an inside perspective. Mr. Kessler's examination of the bureau begins with J. Edgar Hoover's death in 1972. Mr. Kessler's book details how the bureau solved prominent cases, such as Watergate, and covered up many internal cases. The book also scrutinizes the investigation following the bombing of the World Trade Center in February of 1993 and the 1988 Pan Am 103 bombing in Scotland.
Mr. Kessler described the events that led to the dismissal of former FBI Director Williams Sessions. Mr. Kessler was provided access to agents and meetings of the FBI on the directive of then FBI director, William Sessions. In the course of his research, Mr. Kessler uncovered evidence of use of FBI resources for personal matters by Director Sessions. His letter to the director outlining these actions resulted in investigations that ultimately led to the firing of the FBI director by President Bill Clinton in July 1993. The president cited poor judgment by the director as a reason for the firing.

Book Discussion on [Leak: Why Mark Felt Became Deep Throat]

Commemorating the 40th anniversary of the June 17, 1972, Watergate break-in, historian and researcher Max Holland talked about his book, [Leak: Why Mark Felt Became Deep Throat]. In the book he critiques the view of FBI Associate Director Mark Felt presented by Bob Woodward. Using the Woodward and Bernstein papers at the University of Texas, Mr. Holland argues that contrary to popular notions, Mark Felt selfishly used journalists to discredit FBI director L. Patrick Gray in the hope that he would be appointed to the top spot; and that President Nixon's resignation was an unintended consequence. Mr. Holland also compares the Woodward and Bernstein book [All the President's Men] to their original reporting notes, and he argues that they changed key information. Mr. Holland used slides as he spoke and responded to questions from members of the audience at the Kansas City Central Library.

The FBI and the Weather Underground

Two former adversaries reflected on an incendiary time in American history. In the late 1960s and early 1970s long-simmering public unrest over the Vietnam War, social reform, and civil rights erupted into violent radical protest. When the Weather Underground Organization began a series of bombings, including strikes on the U.S. Capitol and the Pentagon, as acts of war against the United States, its young members became the target of one of the largest FBI manhunts in history. Bill Ayers, a founding member of the militant political organization also known as Weatherman, recounted the origins of the WUO, its purpose, as well as his own evolving feelings about its actions and legacy. Don Strickland, a former FBI agent assigned to the WUO case, discussed the bureau's wide-ranging efforts to deal with the WUO's violent acts and track down the fugitive members, many of whom had become skillful in adopting aliases, forging identification, and finding hideouts. After their presentations the participants responded to audience members' questions.

Bill Ayers is the author of [Fugitive Days: A Memoir], published by Penguin.

Book Discussion on [In Nixon's Web]

Ed Gray talked the book he co-wrote with his father, [In Nixon's Web: A Year in the Crosshairs of Watergate], published by Times Books. Ed Gray completed the memoir after his father, L. Patrick Gray III, died on July 6, 2005. Mr. Gray showed slides throughout his presentation. Then he responded to questions submitted by members of the audience.
In his memoir, L. Patrick Gray, III, the second director of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (May 1972-April 1973), recounted his tenure and his knowledge of the Watergate scandal. Mr. Gray decided to write his recollections following the disclosure of Mark Felt's identity as "Deep Throat" in 2005. The former FBI director claims the Nixon administration wanted to marginalize him after it became apparent that he would not lie to protect them and contended that "Deep Throat" could not have been one person.
