      <title>Book Discussion on [Newspaper Titan]</title>
      <description>In her book Amanda Smith recounts the life of Cissy Patterson, the 20th century's first female publisher and editor in chief of a metropolitan daily newspaper. Cissy Patterson came from a family closely connected to the newspaper industry, her grandfather, Joseph Medill, was a former mayor of Chicago and principal owner of the Chicago Tribune and her brother, Joe Medill Patterson was the founder of New York's Daily News. Ms.Patterson, without any prior experience, took over William Randolph Hearst's struggling Washington Herald in 1930. She would later merge the paper with the Washington Times and by 1945 produce multiple daily editions of the Washington Times-Herald with an annual profit over one million dollars. Amanda Smith talked about her book and responded to questions from members of the audience at the Book Cellar in Chicago.</description>

      <title>Book Discussion on [Dangerous Ambition, Rebecca West and Dorothy Thompson]</title>
      <description>In a dual biography, Susan Hertog recounts the life of American journalist Dorothy Thompson (1893-1961), the first female chief of a European news bureau and Rebecca West (1892-1983) a British historian, novelist, and journalist. The author reports that both women, friends for over forty years, had professional success in a pre-feminist world. However, their personal lives were taxed by difficult marriages, Thompson to novelist Sinclair Lewis and West to novelist H.G. Wells as well as strained relationships with their respective sons. Susan Hertog also responded to questions from members of the audience at the Boston Athenaeum.</description>

Video footage was shown of Ms. Rhodes on her radio program, as well as her appearance during the eighteenth hour of the C-SPAN's 25th Anniversary special on October 8, 2005, where she argued with talk show host Janet Parshall.
   
 The program was taped at the Pace University studios in New York City. "The Randi Rhodes Show" is a four-hour liberal radio program combining live interviews, telephone calls from listeners, and her commentary. It is also heard on satellite radio on XM Channel 167.</description>

She went on to be a spokesperson for the Carter administration and later a managing editor at a number of other papers.

      <description>Judy Woodruff, Gwen Ifill, and Candy Crowley talked about their experiences covering presidential campaigns and the 2012 campaign. Topics included the importance to voters of the conventions, ads, and debates. Video clips from PBS were shown, and the panelists also responded to questions from members of the audience. Jim Duff moderated.
The previous week, Cancy Crowley became the first woman to moderate a presidential debate since 1992, although Gwen Ifill moderated the 2004 and 2008 vice-presidential debates as did Judy Woodruff in 1988. In 2012 Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff became the first all-female team to anchor a network's Republican and Democratic National Convention coverage.
"Campaign 2012 Coverage: Breaking New Ground" was a program of the Bipartisan Policy Center held in the Annenberg Theater of the Newseum.</description>

Six percent of the total deployed United States troops were women. And, there were more women journalists, editors, and camera operators covering this war than any previous war.</description>

Both Cissy and Joy Baker were graduates of Mount Vernon College. Cissy Baker is currently producer of the Paula Poundstone Show and was an unsuccessful candidate for Congress herself. This symposium was held in honor of the late Joy Dirksen Baker, the wife of former Senator Howard Baker (R-TN) and the daughter of the late Senator Everett Dirksen (R-IL). Joy Dirksen Baker died earlier this year.</description>

Several top female journalists participated in a panel titled "Media's Role in Defining Women Voters."  They talked about women voters and the media as well as the history of women voters in electoral campaigns from the 1980 election to the present. The journalists also discussed how Reagan initially did not win the majority of the women vote, but by 1984, his campaign had been able to capture a majority of the vote. After they spoke, the panelists responded to questions from members of the audience.
