      <title>Book Discussion on [Causes Won, Lost, and Forgiven]</title>
      <description>Civil War historian Gary Gallagher talked about his book [Causes Won, Lost, and Forgotten: How Hollywood and Popular Art Shape What We Know about the Civil War], published by The University of North Carolina Press. In the book he examines the depictions of the Civil War in films and television programs. Professor Gallagher contends that depending on the political and social landscape of the time of production some details for the reasons for the war are featured while others are diminished. He argues that even after the publication of over 60,000 books on the Civil War more people have been informed about this historical period by film and television. Professor Gallagher showed slides during his presentation. After his presentation he responded to questions from members of the audience.
 
 Gary Gallagher is the author and editor of several books on the Civil War, including [Lee and His Army in Confederate History], [The Lost Cause and Civil War History], and [The Antietam Campaign]. He was a Times-Mirror Foundation Distinguished Fellow at The Huntington Library, 2001-2002.</description>

      <title>Book Discussion on [Leni: The Life and Work of Leni Riefenstahl]</title>
      <description>Steven Bach was interviewed on stage before an audience. He talked about his book [Leni: The Life and Work of Leni Riefenstahl], published by Knopf. German filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl is best known for her documentary films [Triumph of the Will] and [Olympia], produced during the Nazi regime. Riefenstahl was commonly known as "Hitler's filmmaker" and her work was used for propaganda purposes. But Leni Riefenstahl attempted to deny that she knew anything of the Holocaust during her time working with the Nazis. A short clip from Riefenstahl's film [Olympia] was shown. Mr. Bach responded to questions from members of the audience.
 
 Steven Bach teaches film studies and was formerly the head of production at United Artists. This program in the Edmund J. Safra Hall was part of the Museum's book club, Looking Back, Facing Forward, co-sponsored by the [Forward] and moderated by Gabriel Sanders.</description>

      <title>African-American Communities in 1920s Oklahoma</title>
      <description>Historian Currie Ballard talked about his discovery of rare film taken of Oklahoma's black communities in the 1920s by Solomon Sir Jones. Oklahoma was unique in that former black Indian slaves were able to accumulate property during the land runs of the 1890s, leading to the founding of over 50 predominantly African-American communities in the state. Mr. Ballard also talked about the history of the depiction of blacks in film. Various clips from the 1920s films were shown as well as a clip of "I Spy." Mr. Ballard was interviewed at the Melvin B. Tolson Black Heritage Center of Langston University. "
C-SPAN's Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their "2012 LCV Cities Tour" in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on April 9-12 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Cox Communications local cable affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed.</description>

      <description>Participants in a film drama about journalist Edward R. Murrow discussed the movie and the impact Murrow had on journalism and America's political culture. The film, titled [Good Night and Good Luck], focused on the confrontation between Edward R. Murrow and Senator Joseph McCarty over the House Un-American Activities Committee. Following their discussion, the panelists responded to questions and comments from members of the audience. Journalist Marvin Kalb, a CBS correspondent from 1957-80 and was the last correspondent hired by Murrow, moderated the panel.
 
 The panel included George Clooney, who wrote, directed and acted in the film in the role of Murrow's producer Fred Friendly; David Strathairn, the actor who plays Murrow in the film; and Grant Heslov, who wrote, produced and acted in the film in the role of CBS producer Don Hewitt. The Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) hosted this event at the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington, D.C.</description>

      <description>Screenwriter Steve Finefrock spoke on the topic, "The Other Hollywood: How Conservatives Are Making a Difference Along Sunset Boulevard." He talked about conservatives who work in Hollywood, saying that the entertainment industry is dominated by liberals. He described the reasons that conservatives are afraid to speak out. He said that, although outnumbered, conservatives such as Cyrus Nowrasteh, writer of the ABC film [Path to 9-11], have been successful in Hollywood. He analyzed how Hollywood really works and suggested how conservatives can learn to be politically influential. After his presentation he responded to audience members' questions.</description>

In the book, Mr. Robb examines the relationship between Hollywood and the Pentagon. He notes that many films are made with help, often in the form of equipment or technical advice, from the military. He also observes that the Pentagon is far more willing to help make movies that portray the military in a positive light, even sometimes demanding that scripts be altered or scenes deleted in exchange for cooperation.       <title>Wellstone Memorial Dinner</title>
      <description>Michael Moore was honored at the First Annual Paul Wellstone Memorial Award Dinner of The Progressive Caucus of the Genesee County Democratic Party held at Mott Community College. Mr. Moore, who was originally from Flint, Michigan, gave an acceptance speech in which he criticized the war in Iraq. Among the topics he discussed were American troop withdrawal from Iraq, polls showing President Bush's declining popularity, Delphi Corporation filing bankruptcy, and criticism of celebrities. Mr. Moore also had a short dialogue with his sign language interpreter.
 
 Video footage was shown of his March 2003 Academy Award acceptance speech for his documentary [Bowling for Columbine]. Mr. Kildee introduced both the video and Mr. Moore.</description>

 Roger Simon is co-founder and chief executive officer of Pajamas Media. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay for [Enemies: A Love Story]. He is also an award-winning mystery novelist and creator of the Moses Wine series.</description>

Ward Chamberlin, who drove an ambulance with the American Field Service, talked about his experiences in the war and about filming with Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. Panelists responded to questions from the audience.</description>

The independent filmmakers described traveling to the refugee camps in eastern Chad and in Darfur in October 2004. They sneaked across the border between Chad and Sudan and remained behind rebel lines. They interviewed refugees living in camps to produce their documentary film, [Darfur Diaries: Message from Home], about stories of survival in Darfur. Then they wrote a book about their experiences filming the documentary. After their presentations, they responded to questions from members of the audience.</description>
