Senator Wellstone Memorial Service

At a memorial service in Williams Arena at the University of Minnesota friends, family members, colleagues, and dignitaries eulogized Senator Paul Wellstone, his wife Sheila, daughter Marcia Wellstone Markuson, as well as Wellstone campaign aides Tom Lapic, Mary McEvoy, and Will McLaughlin. All died, along with two pilots, in an airplane crash on October 25, 2002, just before a midterm election in which Senator Wellstone was running a competitive campaign. Over 20,000 attended the event. Eulogies were often interrupted by applause as some speakers urged voters to keep Senator Wellstone's vision alive in the upcoming election.

Panelists talked about the 2012 presidential race, voting patterns, the latest polling results, and the closest Senate and House races. They discussed Ohio and its status as a "swing" state, discussing the ground operations of President Obama and Mitt Romney in the state, early voting, and candidate strategy. Norm Ornstein said Republicans were unlikely to win the Senate and Democrats would probably not take back the House, but that some seats could flip parties. The program included questions from audience members.
