After Words with Tierney Cahill

Tierney Cahill talked about her book [Ms. Cahill for Congress: One Fearless Teacher, Her Sixth-Grade Class, and the Election That Changed Their Lives Forever] (Ballantine Books; October 14, 2008). In her book she tells the story of how when she told her sixth-grade students that anyone can participate in politics, even if they are not rich or well-connected, she was challenged to prove it. Ms. Cahill was a single mother of three working at three jobs, but was determined to provide a good role model. With a $7,000 initial campaign chest and her students as her campaign staff, she won the 2000 Democratic nomination as congressional representative for Nevada's 2nd district, which includes Reno, and made an impressive showing against the incumbent. She has since run unsuccessfully for statewide office and continues to teach. The guest interviewer was Congressional Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton.
