Book Discussion on [Karl Marx: A Life]

Mr. Wheen talked about his book [Karl Marx: A Life], published by Norton and Company.
"Imagine Rousseau, Voltaire, and Hegel fused into one person," said a contemporary, "and you have Dr. Marx." In this stunning book, the
first major biography of Marx since the end of the Cold War, Francis Wheen gives us not a
socialist ogre but a fascinating, ultimately humane man. Marx was married to Jenny von
Westphalen, whose devotion was tested by decades of poverty and exile. Wheen does not, however, shy away from Marx's work. Was he, as
his detractors have claimed, a self-hating Jew? What did Marx really mean by his famous
line, "Religion is the opiate of the masses"?

Book Discussion on [King of the Mountain]

Mr. Ludwig talked about his book, [King of the Mountain: The Nature of Political Leadership], published by the University Press of Kentucky. The book presents the findings of his eighteen-year investigation into why people want to rule. Although the answer on the surface seems to be power, privilege, and perks, Mr. Ludwig questioned why so many rulers cling to power even when they are miserable, trust nobody, feel besieged, and face almost certain death. Ludwig's results suggest that leaders of nations tend to act remarkably like monkeys and apes in the way they come to power, govern, and rule. Profiling every ruler of a recognized country in the twentieth century, Ludwig establishes how rulers came to power, how they lost power, the dangers they faced, and the odds of their being assassinated, committing suicide, or dying a natural death. Then, concentrating on a smaller sub-set of 377 rulers for whom more extensive personal information was available, he compares six different kinds of leaders, examining their characteristics, their childhoods, and their mental stability or instability to identify the main predictors of later political success.

From Sunset Boulevard and the Harmony Gold Theater, the guests talked about the political history of America and the world from the mid-1930s to post-World War II through the life and writings of novelist, screenwriter, and philosopher Ayn Rand. With a specific look at Rand's philosophy of Objectivism, they examined why her writings gained currency in the time period and what influence they have had since. They responded to audience telephone calls, faxes and electronic mail. Mr. Britting produced the film, [Ayn Rand: A Sense of Life.] Hollywood in the 30s and 40s played a vital role in the life of Ayn Rand and the dissemination of her ideas, both through her writings in [The Fountainhead], which came out in 1943, and the movie which hit the screen in 1949. Her two novels, [The Fountainhead] (1943), and [Atlas Shrugged], laid out her ideals of the supremacy of individual reason and rights over collective thought, which later became known as her philosophy of Objectivism.

Q&A with Jason Brennan

Jason Brennan talked about his book, [Libertarianism: What Everyone Needs to Know]. He suggested that his goal for the book was to make libertarianism seem reasonable to people who were not inclined to know much about it. He described the book as a primer in the political philosophy described as libertarianism. In his book, Professor Brennan reviews well-know libertarians such as Ayn Rand and Milton Friedman, as well as Adam Smith and John Locke. He broadly defines three categories of libertarian thinkers as classical liberals, hard libertarians, and neo-classical liberals. He names examples of each category and talks about their views on many different economic and social issues. Professor Brennan reacted to video clips of Nick Gillespie, David Boaz, and Milton Friedman. He explained that the book was the latest in a series of "What Everyone Needs to Know" books published by Oxford University Press. In addition, he talked about his life and how he became interested libertarianism.

Book Discussion on [The God Delusion]

Richard Dawkins talked about his book [The God Delusion], published by Houghton Mifflin. In the book he argues that there is no rational or moral reason to believe in God or any other supernatural higher power. He says that because atheists are discriminated against in the United States they tend not to be vocal about their views, even though collectively they could be an influential political and social force. Topics included his own atheism, religion as supernatural belief, famous scientists who were atheists, the cruelties of the Old Testament God, and evolution. He read some selections from his work, and after his presentation he responded to audience members' questions.

Professor Dawkins delivered the Philip Thayer Memorial Lecture in Smith Hall Theatre at Randolph-Macon Woman's College.

She explored the conflict between his identity as a Jew and his belief in a secular, rationalist philosophy. She argued that his secular attitude was a response to a crisis of Jewish identity that he witnessed among the exiles of the Spanish Inquisition living in his community. After her presentation the author responded to audience members' questions.

The FBI and the Weather Underground

Two former adversaries reflected on an incendiary time in American history. In the late 1960s and early 1970s long-simmering public unrest over the Vietnam War, social reform, and civil rights erupted into violent radical protest. When the Weather Underground Organization began a series of bombings, including strikes on the U.S. Capitol and the Pentagon, as acts of war against the United States, its young members became the target of one of the largest FBI manhunts in history. Bill Ayers, a founding member of the militant political organization also known as Weatherman, recounted the origins of the WUO, its purpose, as well as his own evolving feelings about its actions and legacy. Don Strickland, a former FBI agent assigned to the WUO case, discussed the bureau's wide-ranging efforts to deal with the WUO's violent acts and track down the fugitive members, many of whom had become skillful in adopting aliases, forging identification, and finding hideouts. After their presentations the participants responded to audience members' questions.
