Q&A with Lawrence Lessig

Lawrence Lessig talked about his latest book about the influence of money on Congress, in which he argued that large amounts of money, fueled by recent changes in campaign finance rules, can secure legislative influence in the U.S. government. He also talked about clerking for Justice Antonin Scalia at the Supreme Court, and Judge Richard Posner on the 7th Circuit Court. He offered views on the Obama administration's accomplishments, and the influence his father had upon him while growing up in central Pennsylvania.
Lawrence Lessig earned a B.A. and B.S. from the University of Pennsylvania, his M.A. from Cambridge University, and a J.D. from Yale University.

Following his remarks, panelists talked about the use of the filibuster and similarly opposed proposals to eliminate the practice in the Senate. They also responded to audience members' questions.
This program took place one day before the opening of the 112th Congress. Democratic members of the Senate were proposing to alter the filibuster rule on the first day of the new Congress in response to Senate Republicans use of the filibuster in the 111th Congress.

Debate on Senate Floor Proceedings

Late in the session Majority Leader Reid (D-NV) moved that a post-cloture motion by Republicans was dilatory. The chair ruled against the motion and the ruling of the chair was appealed, and the question of whether the chair's ruling should stand was put to the Senate. The Senate failed to support the chair, thus supporting Senator Reid, and establishing a new precedent that post-cloture motions to suspend and take up an amendment could be considered dilatory. The vote was 48-51.
