      <description>Milton Friedman discussed F.A. Hayek's book, [The Road to Serfdom]. Professor Friedman, who wrote the introduction to the 50th anniversary edition of the book, described its effect on the ever-changing political and social climates of the twentieth century. He discussed the book's influence on the rise of socialism after World War II, the Reagan and Thatcher administrations in the 1980s, and the shift in Eastern Europe from communism to capitalism in the 1990s.

      <description>Allison Stanger talked about her book [One Nation Under Contract: The Outsourcing of American Power and the Future of Foreign Policy] (Yale University Press; October 27, 2009). In her book she looks at the increasing use of private contractors by the U.S. government. She argues that although the outsourcing has been poorly managed and has inadvertently militarized American foreign policy, with proper oversight public-private partnerships can be valuable tools for carrying out foreign policy. Professor Stanger responded to questions from members of the audience.

      <description>Democratic representatives held a hearing about the impact of sequestration budget cuts on federal employees and their families and on the work that they do. Marion Blakey, a former head of the Federation Aviation Administration, warned of increased airport delays if automatic budget cuts would go into effect. Other witnesses included an elementary school teacher and the Washington State secretary of health.
"Sequestration," a legal procedure in which every federal agency has the same percentage of its budget taken back in order to cut deficit spending, was agreed to in the Budget Control Act of 2011 and scheduled to happen on March 1, 2013.</description>

      <title>Federal Government Shutdown</title>
      <description>President Clinton announced the current status of a partial government shutdown. He vetoed the continuing resolution offered by Congress because it introduced sharp hikes in Medicare premiums and cuts in education and the environment. The president expressed a strong commitment to balancing the budget by reviewing his administration's record and explaining his budget proposal. He faulted Republicans for sending him a budget he simply could not sign. The president added that he would do his best to minimize the hardships caused to average citizens by the loss of government services during the shutdown.
