Robert Perkinson, American studies professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, presents a history of America's prison system and examines its roots in Texas. Mr. Perkinson details two different ideologies that took form during the development of the American penal system. The North's interest in rehabilitation and the South's belief in retribution and profit. The author relays that the Southern ideology became the template for today's American prison system.
Life and Career of George W. Bush

Mr. Bush, the oldest son of President Bush, talked about life as a member of the first family, his thoughts about running for Governor in 1994, and the parallels between baseball and politics. Mr. Bush, 44, was born in New Haven, Connecticut and currently serves as managing general partner of the Texas Rangers baseball team. He received his undergraduate degree in history from Yale in 1968 and his M.B.A. from Harvard in 1975. He described the rebound of Texas and the rise of the psychological spirit among the people. Mr. Bush maintained that he remained supportive of his father throughout the Persian Gulf war. He spoke about the increased measures of security being used for himself and his family. "He's a man of his word," Mr. Bush stated about his father and praised the President for his actions of the past eight months of his administration. He spoke of his vision about Texas education, which comprises half of the state budget, and the need for improved relations regarding Texas-Mexican relations. "Capitalism for the good of the country," he believed to be the primary reason for his entrepreneurial bent toward the baseball business. He explained his reasons for working for the Rangers and his responsibilities as a general manager of a major baseball team. Mr. Bush commented that he contributed service as well as money after his graduation from business school. Shortly after completing his education he became director of the Harken Energy Corporation of Midland, Texas in the late 1970s. "Texans are competitive and they're willing to serve, and sometimes they're larger than life," he remarked after being asked to describe the images of residents of his state. He explained the pride of Texans about their state's size, ethnic diversity, and culture.

The Alamo

Authors discussed the Alamo, including the historical events, the significance of the battle, and the myths surrounding it. During the Texas war for independence in 1836, soldiers and volunteers fortified the Alamo, an old Spanish mission in San Antonio, against a vastly superior Mexican force. The defenders, including such well-known figures as Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie, held the Alamo for 13 days but were ultimately slaughtered. Though the battle of the Alamo was a military defeat for the Texans, it inflicted significant casualties on the attackers and occupied the Mexican army while a Texan army of sufficient strength was raised. In addition, "Remember the Alamo!" became a rallying cry for Texan independence. Mr. Harrigan is the author of [The Gates of the Alamo], published by Penguin. He also moderated the panel. Mr. Winders is the author of [Davy Crockett: The Legend of the Wild Frontier], published by Powerkids Press; and [Crisis in the Southwest: The United States, Mexico, and the Struggle over Texas], published by Scholarly Resources. Mr. Lindley is the author of [Alamo Traces: New Evidence and New Conclusions], published by Republic of Texas Press. Mr. Thompson is the author of [The Alamo], published by Thunder Bay Press. Panelists responded to questions from the moderator and the audience.
