      <description>Governor Andrew Cuomo gave his annual state of the state address from the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany. He used slides and audiovisual material as he talked about education and campaign finance reform, raising the state minimum wage, tourism in upstate New York, Hurricane Sandy, and his call for a New York state assault weapons ban in light of the elementary school shootings in nearby Newtown, Connecticut. The event also included an official recognition of public service employees and first responders who had distinguished themselves in service to the state.

      <description>Robert Caro talked about his book [The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York], published by Vintage. This biography of Robert Moses won a Pulitzer Prize in 1974. He talked about how he came to write this book about the power of unelected public authorities. Mr. Caro detailed some of the great urban landscapes designed by Robert Moses and the costs to the people and neighborhoods of New York City.
 
 This program was presented in conjunction with the exhibition "Robert Moses and the Modern City: Remaking the Metropolis"  The exhibit at three museums in New York City focuses on the extensive physical transformation of New York City guided by city planner Robert Moses (1888-1981), from 1934 to 1968.</description>

      <description>Richard Zacks recounts stories of New York City in the 1890s, the hub of America's manufacturing and financial world as well as the home of an alternate economy, marked by casinos, brothels, and crime rings. These two worlds co-inhabited New York City until the election of Theodore Roosevelt as the city's police commissioner in 1895. Mr. Zacks recalls the future president's offensive against the city's reputation as "Sin City" that entailed internal battles with Roosevelt's police force and his appeal to two million New Yorkers to engage in other activities. Richard Zacks showed numerous illustrations during his presentation. Then he was interviewed b novelist Kevin Baker and responded to questions from members of the audience at this Tenement Talks presentation at the Tenement Museum in New York City.</description>

      <description>Steven Weisman moderated a discussion about former Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY). Mr. Weisman is the editor of the book [Daniel Patrick Moynihan: A Portrait in Letters of an American Visionary] (PublicAffairs, 2010). The book is a selection of correspondence that spans Senator Moynihan's professional career, from his time as a Harvard professor, to his ambassadorships to India and the United Nations, and his tenure in the Senate (1977-2001). Daniel Patrick Moynihan died in 2003 and although a prolific writer, he never authored an autobiography. Senator Schumer (D-NY) made keynote remarks. The panelists also responded a question submitted from the audience. This discussion took place at the New York Academy of Medicine. It was sponsored by the Museum of the City of New York and co-sponsored by the American Irish Historical Society, the Glucksman Ireland House at New York University, and the Maxwell School at Syracuse University.</description>

The New York Historical Society hosted this talk. New York City's Pennsylvania Station opened in 1910 and was the first all-electric, long-distance train station in America. The noted architecture firm of McKim, Mead and White designed the building, which was widely considered a Beaux Arts masterpiece.</description>

Michael Wallace is the co-author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning bok [Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898]. Mike Wallace is a distinguished professor of history at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, part of the City University of New. York, where he founded the Gotham Center for New York City History. His most recent book, [A New Deal for New York], examines the future of post-September 11 New York City in the light of its past.

      <description>David Paterson was sworn in by Chief Judge Judith Kaye as the 55th governor of New York State at a joint session of the State Assembly and State Senate in the Assembly Chamber. Following his warm and humorous introductions of many New York dignitaries and his family, he spoke of unity and civility in government. He said the principal challenge faced by the legislature will be the economic downturn and its probable affect on the state budget. He promised a "brighter future."

      <title>Book Discussion on [Mike Bloomberg]</title>
      <description>Joyce Purnick talked about her book [Mike Bloomberg: Money, Power, Politics] (PublicAffairs; September 22, 2009). In her biography she traced the life of Michael Bloomberg from child to businessman to self-made billionaire to the 108th mayor of New York City. Then she studied his record and his efforts to overturn the city's two-term limit to win a third term as mayor. Ms. Purnick was joined by her husband Max Frankel. They responded to questions from members of the audience.
Ms. Purnick joined the [New York Times] in 1979 after writing for the [New York Post] and [New York] magazine. She has served in a range of positions, including head of the Metro department. In 1999 she decided to return to writing the "Metro Matters" column. She has covered six New York City mayors.
Max Frankel was executive editor of the [New York Times] from 1986 to 1994. He worked at the newspaper for fifty years, and is the author of [The Times of My Life and My Life with the Times]

      <description>During the first of two hour-long televised encounters, incumbent Mayor Michael Bloomberg debated Democratic challenger Fernando Ferrer. Mr. Ferrer said the incumbent had failed to address unaffordable housing and high dropout rates among high school students. Mayor Bloomberg argued his record on public safety, the economy, and education had earned him a second term. They responded to questions and comments from members of a panel.
 
 The debate was held at the studios of WABC-TV, New York City. The second debate was held on November 1, 2005. Mr. Ritter moderated the event, which was paneled by Ms. Oller, Mr. Louis, and Mr. Evans. Participating by video feed, residents of the city asked questions of the participants.</description>
