Governor Snyder on National Issues in Michigan

Governor Rick Snyder (R-MI) talked about the effects of national issues such as sequestration budget cuts, the economy, immigration, and gun violence on his state of Michigan. He also talked about his priorities for the state in 2013, and he responded to telephone calls and electronic communication.
"Sequestration," a legal procedure in which every federal agency has the same percentage of its budget cut in order to take back deficit spending, was agreed to in the Budget Control Act of 2011 and scheduled to happen on March 1, 2013.
Governor Snyder was in Washington, D.C. for the National Governors Association Winter meeting.

Fiscal Cliff and the Economy

President Obama spoke at the Daimler Detroit Diesel Plant in Redford, Michigan, about the importance of a strong middle class, and called on Congress to sign legislation to avoid the "fiscal cliff." In his speech he said he wanted a tax code that rewarded companies for creating jobs, pointing to Daimler's $120 million investment that was to create 115 new jobs. He also criticized Michigan's just-passed "right to work" legislation: "These so-called right to work laws, they don't have anything to do with economics. They have everything to do with politics. What they're really talking about is, giving you the right to work for less money."
"Fiscal cliff" referred to impending tax increases and budget cuts at the end of 2012 if Congress failed to reach a new budget agreement.

Q&A with Heidi Ewing

Heidi Ewing, co-director and co-producer with Rachel Grady of the documentary film [Detropia], discussed the premise of the film, which seeks to highlight the continuing deterioration of Detroit. She talked about Detroit's dramatic decrease in population over the past fifty years and stated that an additional fifty percent of the remaining population would leave immediately if given the opportunity. She highlighted Detroit Mayor Dave Bing's efforts to bring the city's financial situation under control. She suggested that Detroit is not alone with its problems, and the United States may be heading for an era of failed cities. She reacted to a video clip of "Q&A with Clarance Lusane" about the 1967 riots. Video clips from the film were shown including illegal "scrappers" who stripped metal from abandoned factories, a local blogger who explores empty buildings, and two artists who recently moved to Detroit in search of an inexpensive home and a place to experiment with their art.

Detroit Mayor Perjury Investigation

Kym Worthy announced that she is charging Detroit Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick with perjury; and charging both the Mayor and his former Chief of Staff Christine Beatty with conspiracy to obstruct justice, obstruction of justice and misconduct in office among other charges. These charges are the result of recently discovered sexually explicit text messages that appear to contradict his sworn denials of an affair with a top aide. Ms. Worthy responded to reporters' questions.

The press conference was held in the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice.
