Book Discussion on [A Wilderness So Immense: The Louisiana Purchase]

Dr. Kukla talked about his book [A Wilderness So Immense: The Louisiana Purchase and the Destiny of America], published by Knopf. The book tells the story of the land purchase that doubled the size of the young nation, set the stage for its expansion across the continent, and confronted Americans with new challenges of ethnic and religious diversity and of the sectional balance of power that would reverberate through the Civil War. Dr. Kukla focused on the complex historic origins of the Purchase and on the diplomacy that pulled it off. President Jefferson is the central character, but the machinations of his Federalist opponents kept matters complex. Also important are the principal diplomats -- Robert Livingston and James Monroe on the American side; Talleyrand, Francois de Barbe-Marbois and Napoleon on the French -- whose crucial mix of personality, circumstance and skill made the United States a continental nation so early in its existence

Book Discussion on [Kingfish: The Reign of Huey P. Long]

Richard White talked about his book [Kingfish: The Reign of Huey P. Long], published by Random House. In his book, Mr. White chronicles the life of Louisiana's most iconic figure in the 1930s. Huey Long was the governor of Louisiana from 1928 to 1932 and a U.S. Senator from 1932 to 1935. He was assassinated September 10, 1935 at the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge as he was mounting a presidential bid against then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Mr. White said that he wrote this book to clear up some of the myths and discrepancies generated by Huey Long's contemporaries and by other authors.

Mr. White based his book on interviews with people who knew Huey Long and on oral history. Mr. White said he tried to just give the facts and not opinions in writing this biography, and he wants his audience to decide for themselves whether Huey Long was a dictator, demagogue, or a democrat and to decide who was responsible for Huey Long's death. He also responded to questions from members of the audience.

Louisiana Gubernatorial Runoff Election

WDSU-TV carried live coverage of the election returns for the Louisiana gubernatorial runoff election. Louisiana holds open elections, in which candidates of all parties run against each other, with the top two vote-getters competing in a runoff election. In the 1991 Louisiana governors' race, Democrat Edwin Edwards and Republican David Duke defeated other challengers, including incumbent Governor Buddy Roemer, to make it to the runoff election. The runoff election attained national prominence due to David Duke's past participation in Ku Klux Klan activities. The broadcast included interviews with both candidates and participants in the election campaigns, county by county poll results, videotaped interviews with the candidates from the campaign, election night analysis by political observers, and the victory and concession speeches by the candidates. Democrat Edwin Edwards won the Louisiana gubernatorial election by a margin of 61 to 39 percent.

Protesters against Republican state Representative Duke were shown prior to the speech. The introduction and remarks were frequently interrupted by outbreaks of chanting and cheering from the protesters. Over the chants of the protesters, Rep. Duke began his speech with an appeal to the First Amendment and respect for this cornerstone of American freedoms. He said, "Suppression does not always end up in suppressing the ideas. Sometimes it spurs people on, and spurs a love of freedom on for all people." He talked about his views on race, affirmative action, welfare, and taxes, which he called "The Agenda for America Today." Rep. Duke is campaigning for the governorship of Louisiana. A former member of the Democratic Party, Rep. Duke has also run for the presidency in 1988 as a Populist Party candidate, and last year in a bid for the U.S. Senate received 43.5 percent of the vote against a three-term incumbent. In 1980, Rep. Duke left his position as the Grand Wizard of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan and served for nine years as the president of the National Association for the Advancement of White People.
