Herbert Hoover’s Secret History of the Second World War and its Aftermath

Historian George Nash discussed Herbert Hoover's manuscript, [Freedom Betrayed: Herbert Hoover's Secret History of the Second World War and Its Aftermath], which was edited by both Mr. Nash and the Hoover Institution Press. The book is the culmination of a literary project launched by Hoover during WWII that evolved into a critique of U.S. foreign policy during the war and the early years of the Cold War. Hoover argues that FDR's pre-war and wartime diplomacy had made the world safe for Stalinist Russia and triggered the Cold War.

America's Foreign Policy at Mid-Century

Historians discuss the significant change in America's foreign policy in the wake of World War II. Prior to this war, America was committed to a non-interventionism, reflecting America's geographic remove from Europe. After the war, America became the leader of the free world, providing the first lines of defense against Soviet expansion. Historians Justus Doenecke, Thomas Fleming and Patrick Hearden will explore this crucial pivot point in American foreign policy.
This event took place at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum in West Branch, Iowa.
