Social and Cultural Impact of the Space Race

Neil Maher spoke about his research on the history of the U.S.-Soviet space race of the 1960s and 1970s. He spoke about the geopolitical implications of the effort to be first in space, but also how images from space and press coverage of the science involved provided a basis for global awareness of environmental issues. He argued that the space race also influenced many of the social movements of the postwar era, including the fight for civil rights, equality for women, an end to the Vietnam War, and the rise of suburbia and the military industrial complex. Following his remarks, which were accompanied by slides, he answered questions from members of the audience.
The talk "Ground control: Beyond an environmental history of the space race," was delivered at noon in Whittall Pavilion of the Thomas Jefferson Building.
