Japan Nuclear Plant Crisis and Chernobyl Anniversary

Nuclear specialists talked about the impact of the nuclear plant crisis in Japan as a result of the country's 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami. Alexey Yablokov, who studied the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, said the situation in Japan was particularly dangerous because of the highly concentrated populations near that country's damaged nuclear plant. He also talked about a new study on Chernobyl. It suggested that as many as 1 million people had died because of the explosion at the Soviet-era plant 25 years ago.

Book Discussion on [Full Body Burden]

Kristen Iversen recounts her childhood in Arvada, Colorado, adjacent to the Rocky Flats nuclear weaponry facility, which produced over 70,000 plutonium triggers for nuclear bombs. Using elements of memoir writing and investigative journalism, the author examines the effect the plant had on the environment and what the U.S. government did not divulge to the local populace. Ms. Iversen utilized EPA and FBI documents, interviews, and class-action testimony to better understand the operations at Rocky Flats, which ceased in 1992. Kristen Iversen responded to questions from members of the audience at Elliott Bay Book Company in Seattle.

Three Mile Island Anniversary

Panelists talked about the incident at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant. On March 28, 1979, a combination of equipment malfunctions, operator errors, and design flaws led to the most serious nuclear accident in American history. The accident occurred when a loss of coolant flow to the reactor core resulted in a partial core meltdown and the release of a small amount of radiation into the environment. Mr. Glass moderated the discussion. Following prepared remarks, the panelists responded to questions from the moderator and the audience.

This event was held on the 25th anniversary of the Three Mile Island accident.

Book Discussion on [Three Mile Island]

Mr. Walker talked about his book, [Three Mile Island: A Nuclear Crisis in Historical Perspective], published by University of California Press. This accident on March 28, 1979, remains the worst accident in the history of commercial nuclear power in the United States. During his talk, he described his motivations for writing the book, as well as the difficulties of capturing the complexities of the disaster in an interesting and understandable way. He described the events before, during, and after the Three Mile Island accident. Mr. Walker offered insights into the decision-making process of officials and the impact of the media on public perceptions of the event. He also discussed the effect of Three Mile Island on the future of nuclear power and nuclear power plant regulation. Mr. Walker was interviewed by Mr. Stine and also responded to questions from members of the audience.
This "Meet the Author" event was part of a commemoration at the National Museum of American History of the 25th anniversary of the disaster.

Chernobyl: Five Years Later

Exactly five years ago, on April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant fire resulted in the release of radioactive material. The plenary session served to commemorate those who died and suffered from the accident and called for a world-wide abandonment of nuclear power as an energy source. Soviet Olympic champion Korbut and other speakers described their personal experiences and involvement with the Chernobyl assistance and anti-nuclear power movements.

The Conference for a Nuclear-Free 1990s called the Chernobyl fire the worst industrial accident of the modern age. The plant is located in the Soviet Ukraine. The accident was amplified by the Soviet Union's secrecy when the accident occurred and their poor power plant designs which are not used by other countries employing nuclear power.

Book Discussion on [The Ambushed Grand Jury: Govenment Nuclear Crimes]

A panel discussed the book [The Ambushed Grand Jury: How the Justice Department Covered Up Government Nuclear Crime; And How We Caught Them Red Handed], published by Apex Press. From 1952 to 1989, the Department of Energy's Rocky Flats Plant, located just outside Denver, Colorado, manufactured plutonium triggers for nuclear warheads. In 1989, the FBI raided the plant to investigate charges that plant managers were violating federal environmental and safety laws. A grand jury later recommended that managers from DOE and Rockwell International be indicted, but the U.S. attorney handling the case, Mike Norton, instead struck a deal with Rockwell. As part of the deal, members of the grand jury were ordered not to discuss their investigation and their grand jury report was kept secret. During this panel discussion, Wes McKinley, the grand jury foreman, his attorney and co-author, Caron Balkany, and former plant employee, Jacque Brever, talked about the case and argued that the U.S. government is guilty of covering up serious crimes. The panelists and members of the audience answered questions. Ms. Calhoun moderated the event.

Confronting the Worst: Writing and Catastrophe

Moderated by Ms. Linfield, a group of writers discussed topics such as the writer's role as documentarian, scourge to conscience and action, and moral witness. They also explored whether that role has been affected by changing technologies, particularly photo- and video-journalism and the Internet. This diverse group of writers who have made distinguished contributions to this literature shared reflections on writing about, and on trying to grasp, some of the most extreme horrors of recent history, such as genocide, war, and torture. After they read from their writings, they answered questions from the moderator and audience members. The introductions were made by Salman Rushdie.

Kapuscinski wrote [The Soccer War.] Alexievich wrote [Voices from Chernobyl]. Emcke wrote [Letters from the Edge of the World.] Gourevitch wrote [We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will be Killed With Our Families]. Poniatowska wrote [Nothing, Nobody: The Voices of the Mexico City Earthquake.] Bizot wrote [The Gift.]
