      <description>Timothy Egan talked about his book [The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt &amp; the Fire That Saved America] (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt; October 19, 2009). He talked about the largest forest fire in American history on August 20, 1910, drought-ravaged areas of Washington, Idaho, and Montana went up in flames as winds created a massive blaze . A group of 10,000 men were organized by forest rangers to stop the fire that destroyed small towns and national forests and killed nearly 100 people. Mr. Egan recalled the struggles of the fire-fighters that inspired the nation to continue on with former President Teddy Roosevelt's interest in preserving forest land. He responded to questions from members of the audience.
Timothy Egan is the author of [The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl], which was awarded the 2006 National Book Award for Nonfiction. He currently writes a weekly column titled, "Outposts" for the [New York Times].

      <title>Book Discussion on [Rescue Warriors]</title>
      <description>David Helvarg was a guest on WAMU's "Diane Rehm Show" to talk about his book [Rescue Warriors: The U.S. Coast Guard, America's Forgotten Heroes] (Thomas Dunne Books; May 12, 2009). In his book David Helvarg discusses the history and activities of the United States Coast Guard, founded in 1797 by Alexander Hamilton. Formerly part of the Department of Transportation, the Coast Guard is currently under the Department of Homeland Security and is a miltitary as well as law enforcement branch of the government. This duel status means the Coast Guard rescues people in trouble at sea, operates in war zones like Iraq and Vietnam, patrols the Artic ocean with ice breakers, and also intercepts drug runners using ships and aircraft. He talked about his activities in researching the book and stories of the Coast Guard such as during Hurricane Katrina and the World Trade Center attacks. Other topics included the wide and expanding range of duties of the Coast Guard. He responded to telephone calls and electronic communications from listeners.

David Helvarg is a journalist, private investigator, and a contributing editor on Public Radio International's Marketplace. He has written numerous articles on a wide range of ocean topics including high sea drift nets, off-shore drilling, and the Navy SEALs.       <description>Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan, Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Craig Fugate and Red Cross Senior Vice President Charley Shimanski conducted a conference call with the press regarding recovery efforts, and food and shelter assistance after Hurricane Sandy. Officials provided an update to reporters and stated that more than 200,000 applications had been received for housing assistance. Topics included criteria for getting assistance, transitional housing funds, and the impact of the storm on the "uninsured". Secretary Donovan shared some personal stories from his "sobering" trip to New York City over the weekend.

      <title>National Flood Insurance Program</title>
      <description>The House Financial Services Subcommittee on Insurance, Housing and Community Opportunity held a hearing on the National Flood Insurance Program. The program insures more than 5.5 million houses in the U.S., but is more than $18 billion in debt and has been unstable since the hurricanes of 2004 and 2005. 
Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Craig Fugate was scheduled to appear at the hearing but could not, due to the 8.9 earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan earlier in the morning and the subsequent tsumani threat to Hawaii and the west U.S. coastline.</description>
