Energy Security

Anne Korin, editor of [Energy Security], spoke at the morning session of the 30th National Conservative Student Conference about reducing dependence on foreign oil. She compared the value of oil in the present to salt's status as a valuable commodity in the past. The value of salt decreased as technologies such as refrigeration, canning, and electricity surpassed it as a food preservation method. Encouraging and supporting the development of oil alternatives will reduce the value of oil in the same way. Following her remarks, Ms. Korin responded to questions from the audience.

Young America's Foundation held its 30th National Conservative Student Conference at the Marvin Center of George Washington University for students to learn about conservative ideas seldom taught in college classrooms. This was part of a morning session.

Book Discussion on [Eisenhower 1956]

David Nichols, former academic dean of Southwestern College, presented a history of the Suez Canal Crisis. The author recounted that nine days prior to the 1956 presidential election, Israel, Britain, and France attacked Egypt, which had recently nationalized the Suez Canal, the transportation artery for 2/3 of Western Europe's oil supply. The Soviet Union soon announced the intention to intervene in the Middle East, which resulted in President Dwight Eisenhower's decision to place American military forces on high alert and condemn the attacks on Egypt at the United Nations. Mr. Nichols utilized Oval Office and National Security Council minutes to recount the foreign policy negotiations, which resulted in a cease-fire announced on Election Day, November 6, 1956. Mr. Nichols responded to questions from members of the audience at this Livingston Lecture at the Atlanta History Center.

Mr. Yergin talked about his book [The Prize: The Epic Quest for Oil, Money and Power], published by Touchstone Books, about the history of the oil industry and its influence on world politics and economy. His research for the book included over sixty interviews with leading figures in the oil industry, oral histories, and governmental publications. Mr. Yergin named George Bissell as the father of the oil industry for first conceiving the idea of drilling for oil. Mr. Yergin also speculated on the future of U.S. oil reserves and the oil industry in general. He examined American oil production and consumption and predicted future oil dependence. He also related the Persian Gulf war to the oil power base of the Middle East.

Boone Pickens, in the first portion of the hearing, suggested that the government invest in building an infrastructure for wind power generation and provide incentives to private business to operate wind power generation facilities. He said the move could potentially reduce consumption of natural gas that could be used for transportation purposes. The second panel responded to Mr. Pickens' proposals and focused on national security and transportation aspects of U.S. energy policy.

Empire-Building: Domestic and International Consequences

Authors talked about the Bush administration's foreign and domestic policies and the upcoming presidential election. Amy Goodman, host of [Democracy Now!], acted as moderator. The panelists responded to questions from members of the audience.

Professor Chomsky spoke about the damage done to the U.S. reputation abroad, noting that in the Muslim world, "substantial majorities view the U.S. military as a threat," and that the number of people abroad who "dislike or distrust the U.S. has doubled or tripled." He discussed the proliferation of offensive military capacity, and connected this expansion of war-making capabilities to the growing international distrust of the U.S. He argued that increasing American offensive capability actually decreases security: "People who feel threatened tend to react. They react violently sometimes." Professor Chomsky is the author of [Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance].

Mr. Carroll spoke about the importance of "ending this abominable war in Iraq," and drew parallels between his experiences opposing the Vietnam War and opposing the war in Iraq. He described the war in Iraq as "a pack of lies" that "darkens the national mood." "America was not meant to be like this," he said. Mr. Carroll is author of [Crusade: Chronicles of an Unjust War].

Professor Klare spoke about different conceptions of "empire." He argued that U.S. foreign policy is consistent with an imperial policy, and noted that the U.S. is forging an "empire of petroleum, for petroleum, and by petroleum." Mr. Klare is the author of [Blood and Oil: The Dangers and Consequences of America's Growing Petroleum Dependency].

Former Shell Oil Company President John Hofmeister spoke about U.S. energy policy. He criticized both the Obama administration and Congress among his comments. He said President Obama has no plan to reduce gas prices and the U.S. dependence on foreign oil, and that members of Congress insulted oil companies at a previous day Senate Finance Committee hearing on eliminating their companies' tax breaks. He also said he predicted months ago that U.S. gas prices would reach $5 per gallon because "we're not producing enough domestic oil."

Oil Price Issues

Top-level executives from the five largest oil companies testifies about the current state of oil and gas prices, oil company profits, and the need for clean, renewable fuels to ease demand for oil and cut global warming pollution. Committee members expressed outrage that oil companies are raking in huge profits at a time when most Americans are struggling to pay their energy bills, but executives claimed that their profits were close to the Dow Jones Industrial Average for major industries and that they were not responsible for record prices. They laid most of the blame on foreign state-owned oil companies. Although emphasizing that oil and gas will remain the primary source of energy in the foreseeable future, they also stressed the investments that their companies have made in renewable energy technologies. However, some members of the committee expressed doubt that the investments were enough to make a difference. Executives asked for a stable, fair tax system that would make long term planning on the part of oil companies easier.
