Then they responded to questions from members of the audience in the Upper School Chapel of St. Christopher's School in Richmond, Virginia.

Kit Yarrow talked about the book she wrote with Jayne O'Donnell, [Gen Buy: How Tweens, Teens and Twenty-Somethings Are Revolutionizing Retail], published that day by Jossey-Bass. The authors explore the psychology behind this new consumer who shops 25 to 40 percent more than the average consumer. Topics included how this generation has already changed marketing, such as downloading music from the internet instead of buying CDs. Professor Yarrow also talked about the research methods used. She used slides during her presentations and responded to questions from members of the audience.
This presentation was held at the Commonwealth Club of California at 6:00 p.m. PT on September 8, 2009.

Book Discussion on [Outcasts United]

Warren St. John talked about his book [Outcasts United: A Refugee Team, an American Town], published by Spiegel and Grau. In the book he explores the soccer program led by Luma Mufleh in Clarkston, Georgia, for refugee boys from war-torn countries in Africa, the Balkans, and the Middle East. They are highly disadvantaged because of hostility by residents of Clarkston that disapprove of the government moving refugees into their town, poor funding, and children who are highly traumatized by their violent past. Despite these challenges, the program has shown effectiveness in integrating the refugees and keeping them in school and out of gangs. Following his remarks, Mr. St. John answered questions from members of the audience.

Book Discussion on [Hollowing Out the Middle]

Patrick Carr talked about the book he co-wrote, [Hollowing Out the Middle: The Rural Brain Drain and What it Means for America] (Beacon Press; October 1, 2009). In the book the authors reported their research in a small Iowa town where the exodus of the most educated young people threatens the future of such towns and of small-town life in America. Also, the large-scale departure of the young people leaves behind a largely immigrant, segregated population taking the low-paying jobs, making small middle-American towns look more and more like inner cities. He also responded to questions from members of the audience at this event at the Sumner Public Library at 7:00 p.m. CT on Tuesday, October 27, 2009.
Patrick J. Carr is an associate professor of sociology at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. He is also the author of [Clean Streets].

He committed a carjacking at the age of 16 and served in an adult prison until he was 24. Mr. Betts, a published poet, also talked about the importance of reading.
He was interviewed at the 32nd Annual National Press Club Book Fair and Authors' Night, a fundraiser for the Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library held Tuesday, November 17, 2009 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
