After Words with Liza Mundy

Ms. Mundy argues that what she describes as a new economic order - a growing percentage of women earning more than their husbands - is having an effect on the social order. More men are looking at marriage as a means of economic stability or staying home with the children, choices previously reserved for women. She discussed the long-term implications of this and other role reversals with April Ryan.

After Words with Rick Santorum

Sen. Rick Santorum discussed his book [It Takes a Family: Conservatism and the Common Good], published by Intercollegiate Studies Institute. He explained his belief that the values of conservatism create an appreciation for the civic bonds that unite communities. He also argued that strengthening family ties in American society should take a higher priority over the "village" of the federal government promoted in a previous book by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. He was interviewed by Kirk Victor, the Senate correspondent for the [National Journal.]

Sen. Rick Santorum is a Republican U.S. Senator representing Pennsylvania. Senator Santorum serves on the Senate Agriculture Committee; the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs; the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration; the Senate Special Committee on Aging; and the Senate Finance Committee, of which he is the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Social Security and Family Policy.

Kirk Victor covers the Senate for [National Journal]. Mr. Victor has covered numerous beats since he joined the magazine in 1987, including lobbying, labor, transportation, telecommunications and energy. He joined [National Journal] after reporting stints at [National Law Journal] and [Legal Times], and was a litigator in the Justice Department's Civil Division.

Ms. Lerner compares the working parents policies of the U.S. to those of the European social democracies, while examining the impact in America of women having joined the work force en mass. She says that though most families need the income of both parents to stay afloat, corporate and governmental policies in the U.S. don't recognize the additional needs of mothers who hold the full-time job of primary care of the family, while also working outside the home.

He emphasized that young men need to learn how to serve society as men before they become fathers.
Post-World War II Growth of Suburbs

History Professor Andrew Morris discusses the unprecedented demand for affordable housing from the mid-1940s and into the 1950s that was created by returning World War II veterans. Professor Morris explains that the building of new homes had slowed during the Great Depression and during World War II, when materials were rationed. As thousands of veterans came home and started families-and the country experienced an economic upswing-the demand for new housing skyrocketed, resulting in the dramatic growth of U.S. suburbs. Video clips of promotional films and newsreels of the period were shown, as well as other slides.

Same-Gender Marriage Rule Debate

In an excerpt, members debated the rule for legislation which would define marriage and allow states not to recognize same-gender marriages. The bill would also define marriage, for federal purposes, as "only a legal union between one man and one woman." Currently same-gender marriages are not legal in any state, although the Hawaii Supreme Court recently ruled that denying marriage to gay couples may violate equal protection. Reps. Studds and Frank, who previously had declared their homosexuality, spoke in opposition to the legislation.

Exploitation of Children over the Internet, Day 1

Witnesses testified about the dangers of child predators on the Internet and ways to protect children by better educating parents and the children themselves. It was noted that the anonymity and accessibility of the Internet allow child predators to operate easily, and that the extent of online child pornography is staggering.

There were five panels of witnesses, including Mr. Berry who was exploited as a thirteen-year-old and journalist Eichenwald who reported on his story. At the end of his testimony Mr. Berry identified Mr. Gourlay as a person whom he alleged had molested him. Mr. Gourlay was sworn in but declined to answer questions, citing his Fifth Amendment rights.

Topics included developmental pediatrics and the effects of sexual exploitation on children, cyber tip lines for reporting suspected Internet child exploitation, digital stalking, child prostitution, attempts to identify the children in online pornography, the role of law enforcement, the large amounts of money involved in child pornography, and organizations that help exploited children and educate children to prevent exploitation.

Oral Arguments Against Same-Sex Marriage

On May 31, 2006, New York's highest court, in Albany, heard oral arguments in four same-sex marriage cases: [Hernandez v. Robles, Samuels v. New York State Dept. of Health, Matter of Kane v. Marsolais], and [Seymour v. Holcomb]. At issue was granting marriage licenses to same-sex couples based on the New York constitution's guarantee of "equality, liberty and privacy for all New Yorkers." The challenge to the state's marriage laws resulted from an appeal filed by 44 same-sex couples who lost their cases in the lower appeals court. In this portion the attorneys arguing against gay marriage were shown.

In [Unequal Democracy: The Political Economy of the New Gilded Age] (Princeton University Press, April 27, 2008) Larry Bartels wrote about how politics drives inequality in America. He argues that while both parties cater to the rich, Republicans have done more to increase inequality than the Democrats. Professor Bartels and two other experts in the field, Professors Suzanne Mettler and Martin Gilens, spoke on the social implications of rising economic inequality at the Russell Sage Foundation in New York City.

Book Discussion on [Surviving Twice: Amerasian Children of the Vietnam War]

Trin Yarborough talked about her book, [Surviving Twice: Amerasian Children of the Vietnam War], published by Potomac Books. She talked about the lives of orphans who weren born to American soldiers during the Vietnam War. Randy Tuan, who was one of many orphans adopted to work on a farm, spoke about his life and music. Following their presentation, Mr. Tuan and Ms. Yarborough responded to questions and comments from members of the audience.

The book told the stories of five Vietnamese Amerasians born during the Vietnam War to American soldiers and Vietnamese mothers. Not among the few thousand Amerasian children brought to the U. S. before the war's end who grew up as Americans, speaking English and attending American schools, this group faced many more formidable obstacles, both in Vietnam and in their new home. She wrote that an estimated 100,000 children were born during the Vietnam War to American soldiers and Vietnamese mothers. She also wrote that many of these children faced difficult lives as a result of racial prejudice or an inability to identify completely with the Vietnamese culture. The book looked at the effects of the Amerasian Homecoming Act, a Congressional program enacted in 1987 that brought 28,000 Vietnamese Americans to the United States before the program was stopped in 1994 because of problems with fraud.

[Is Bill Cosby Right?] Book Group Discussion

The African American Authors Book Discussion Group met in the Whittaker Road Community Meeting Room to discuss Michael Eric Dyson's book [Is Bill Cosby Right: Or Has the Black Middle Class Lost Its Mind?], published by Basic Civitas Books. The book challenged critical comments comedian Bill Cosby made in April 2004 about lower-income blacks at a NAACP dinner celebrating the 50th anniversary of [Brown v. Board of Education]. Mr. Cosby accused poor blacks of being illiterate, irresponsible parents and "not holding up their end of the deal." The book club members, who were identified by first name only, dissected both Bill Cosby's arguments and Michael Eric Dyson's rebuttals.

The program began with a video clip from an interview of Michael Eric Dyson by Debra Dickerson about his book in the C-SPAN studios on May 12, 2005.

A ten-minute video presentation created by UCLA was shown. It consisted of clips of television shows from the past few decades illustrating both positive and negative views of family relationships. Then President Clinton and the vice president discussed media programming with communications experts, religious leaders, and representatives of several medical fields and law enforcement. The participants expressed concern about the violence and sexual content of movies, television and popular music, and suggested ways of improving this without losing commercial sponsorship. The president has proposed an amendment to the Telecommunications Bill requiring that all televisions be manufactured with a "v-chip" which would enable parents to block channels or programs they do not want their children to watch.
