Book Discussion on [Fountain of Age]

Ms. Friedan explained that her new book, [The Fountain of Age], published by Simon and Schuster, describes "a period of human life that most people didn't even used to have." Ms. Friedan took an Outward Bound wilderness course for persons over 55 years of age. The course became a metaphor for searching for the "fountain of age," rather than the fountain of youth. Through research and hundreds of interviews, she came to describe the "older years" as a new period of life for most men and women, not a time of deterioration. She found in these people a willingness to take risks, and a desire to keep learning. She said that in the U.S., the negative images of old age are even "more pernicious and more pervasive" than negative images of women. Ms. Friedan's previous book, [The Feminine Mystique], has sold millions of copies.

The responses are a compilation of short letters, essays, paragraphs and quotes that provided a generally optimistic view from senior citizens.

Book Discussion on [The Longevity Revolution]

Robert Butler, founder of the National Institute on Aging and author of [The Longevity Revolution: The Benefits and Challenges of Living a Long Life], talked about the geopolitics of aging. Topics included chronic diseases, nutrition and vaccinations, why we need to be concerned about health and aging issues in the developing world, and human rights for older persons. Following his remarks, Dr. Butler answered audience members' questions.

In [The Longevity Revolution] ((PublicAffairs; March 3, 2008) Dr. Bulter wrote about increasing life expectancy and what it means for each of us. He argued that longevity is not entirely positive, particularly if it is not accompanied by quality of life. He predicted more physical and mental illnesses in the future and discussed the impact of increasing life expectancy on family structure, economics, long-term care, and health care.

Robert Butler, M.D., is president and CEO of the International Longevity Center. In 1975, he became founding director of the National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health, and in 1982 he founded the first department of geriatrics in a U.S. medical school at the Mount Sinai Medical Center. He is also the author of [Why Survive? Being Old in America].

Family Elder Abuse

The committee held a hearing on the abuse of the elderly by family members. There is a lack of data, but it appears to be the largest category of elder abuse.

The first panel of witnesses testifies on behalf of victims of elder abuse. Mrs. Watts related how she was victimized by her son. After a news clip of the case was shown, Mr. Lofy reported on a typical fire and police call to a scene of neglect of the elderly and how the situation came about. Mr. Stein, a prosecutor for an elder abuse unit, gave a video presentation as he reported on the range of cases he has prosecuted and the details of some typical cases of family members who cared for their elderly relatives only for financial gain.

Mr. Connor testified about the tension between ensuring the adequacy of care of the elderly and making it affordable. Ms. Ramsey-Klawsnik testified about the unmet needs of the elderly and abused and the problems of those combating it. Mr. Snyder testified about services for vulnerable adults and the source of many problems.

Both panels answered questions about the outcomes of cases, the effectiveness of laws, and the lack of research data and training for personnel.
