Book Discussion on [The Myth of Heterosexual AIDS]

Mr. Fumento talked about his book [The Myth of Heterosexual AIDS: How a Tragedy Has Been Distorted by the Media and Partisan Politics], published by Regnery. The author discussed problems in getting the book published and in getting it distributed because of controversy over AIDS. He described getting interested in the early 1980's myth of missing children and how the media "can terrify the American public with virtually nothing to go on." When he saw the AIDS scare growing he decided to expose myths surrounding the disease. He talked about serving as an AIDS analyst for the Civil Rights Commission and reaction to an article he wrote about conservatives using the AIDS scare to enforce traditional morality. He discussed the animosity and anger that has been directed toward him. He also talked about the groups that benefit from making AIDS "everybody's disease." The author argues that both the numbers of people infected with the AIDS virus and the risks to heterosexuals have been blown out of proportion. Mr. Fumento also asserts that the money spent on AIDS research has been drained from the fight against cancer.

After Words with Craig Timberg

Craig Timberg promotes the theory that Western colonial powers unwittingly sparked the AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa simply by sending people into remote regions where chimpanzees had carried the virus for millennia without it spreading to humans. Mr. Timberg also argues that Western attempts to stem the epidemic through condom distribution and abstinence campaigns are ineffective because they ignore homegrown African initiatives that focus on stemming the behaviors that spread the virus. Mr. Timberg discussed his assertions with Scott Evertz, a former director of the U.S. Office of National AIDS Policy.

HIV Epidemic in Washington, D.C.

Tiffany West Ojo and Dr. Raymond Martins talked about HIV/AIDS research and treatment and the HIV epidemic in Washington, D.C. They responded to calls from listeners.

A report issued recently by the District of Columbia Department of Health shows that 3% of the city's residents are infected with HIV, although officials believe the true figure is even higher. 1% is the typical threshold that constitutes a generalized and severe epidemic. The rate of new cases in D.C. is 11 times higher than the national average. An estimated one million people are currently living with HIV in the U.S., with approximately 40,000 new infections occurring each year. One third of them do not know they are HIV-positive.

Book Discussion on [Keep Singing]

Patsy Clarke and Eloise Vaughn talked about their book [Keep Singing: Two Mothers, Two Sons, and Their Fight Against Jesse Helms], published by Alyson Publications. Patsy Clarke and Eloise Vaughn both lost a son to AIDS. Ms. Clarke had written a letter asking Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC) to change his opposition to AIDS research. When the senator's reply did not seem to be sympathetic to their situation, the two women formed Mothers Against Jesse in Congress (MAJIC) to oppose his 1996 re-election to congress. Their group gained national attention. Allan Gurganus, who wrote the forward to the book, introduced the authors and Nicole Brodeur, who assisted with the book, also spoke. Other mothers in their group were introduced at this event. Following their remarks, the authors answered questions from members of the audience.
Allan Gurganus is the author of [Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All], published by Vintage.
