Holsinger, Jr., M.D., Ph.D., of Kentucky, to be Medical Director and Surgeon General of the Public Health Service, Department of Health and Human Services. Many of the committee's questions were devoted to questions about whether Dr. Holsinger would reject political interference from Bush administration officials and previous positions. He testified that he had a track record of bucking political opposition, including his efforts to raise taxes on tobacco in Kentucky, and that he would take on the pharmaceutical industry by calling for a ban on the advertising of drugs directly to consumers. He also sought to distance himself from a controversial 1991 paper on homosexuality and health, saying that it was not a scientific study and that many issues it raised are outdated.</description>
