Northern Ireland Politics

Mr. Dougal and Mr. White discussed the continuing "troubles" in Northern Ireland. Irish Protestants, numbering approximately one million in Northern Ireland, want Northern Ireland to remain under the government of Great Britain, as it presently does. Irish Catholics, numbering approximately 500,000, desire Northern Ireland to be merged with the Republic of Ireland, which is mainly Catholic. Violence between Catholics and Protestants broke out in 1969, and has continued to this day, although talks between the two sides are being conducted in Belfast to attempt to ease political tension in the area. The two journalists discussed the continuing violence and hopes for agreement between the Catholic Nationalists and the Protestant Unionists.
