Victor Suvorov, author of [The Chief Culprit: Stalin's Grand Design to Start WWII] (Naval Institute Press; November 14, 2008), talked about his book. Mr. Suvorov argues that Germany's attempt to invade the USSR was based on intelligence Hitler received that the Soviets were preparing to attack Germany.
Following his presentation, Mr. Suvorov responded to questions from the audience.

Viktor Suvorov was a Soviet military intelligence officer who defected in 1978. He is the author of numerous books, including [Aquarium: The Making of a Top Soviet Spy].

Book Discussion on [In the Garden of Beasts]

Erik Larson recounts the tenure of the first American ambassador to Hitler's Germany, William Dodd. The former college professor and his family arrived in Germany in 1933 and became friendly with many members of Hitler's SS. The ambassador soon began to see Berlin change and became aware of Jewish persecution. Mr. Larson reports that Ambassador Dodd sent the State Department concerned reports, which were received with indifference as greater violence arose in Berlin and throughout Germany. Erik Larson also responded to questions from members of the audience and called on his daughter to answer one question. This event was in the Cindy Pritzker Auditorium of the Chicago Public Library's Harold Washington Library Center.

Life & Career of Margaret Thatcher

Former Prime Minister Thatcher was in the United States to receive the Presidential
Medal of Freedom. This is the highest honor the United States
president can bestow on a civilian in peace time.

Prime Minister Thatcher talked about the British government and the way it
operates. She said that when the prime minister's question time
began airing on C-SPAN, she received a great deal of correspondence
from Americans who had been unfamiliar with the British governing
system. The impact of media on the process was also discussed.

Prime Minister Thatcher said the British system of government works very well
for them, but that the differences from the United States legislative
and administrative processes make the two systems difficult to
compare. For example, in the United States, the president is a
combination of the prime minister and the monarchy.
