Presidential Remarks at the United Nations General Assembly

President Obama addressed the United Nations General Assembly. He focused on various events from the preceding year, including democratic movements in Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, the killing of Osama bin Laden, as well as challenges remaining in Iran, Syria, and North Korea. He also spoke about the Middle East peace process and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas' desire to seek full recognition from the U.N. Security Council.
Q&A with Ami Horowitz

Ami Horowitz talked about his film, [U.N. Me], a critical portrayal of the role the United Nation plays in global politics and peacekeeping. He uses the term "docutainment" for his movie, crediting liberal filmmaker Michael Moore with motivating him, but calls his own political perspective "right of center." He argues that the U.N. has failed to serve the world in the manner for which it was chartered in 1945, citing examples of murder and rape by U.N. troops and its lack of decisive action to stop the genocide in Rwanda and ethnic cleansing in Sudan. He said he was outraged by the selection of Iranian President Ahmadinijad as the keynote speaker at the U.N.'s human rights conference. He described gaining access to the U.N. for filming and traveling the world for the production. Video clips of the film were shown.
Ami Horowitz was born in Los Angeles and attended the University of Southern California. He worked as an investment banker in New York City. This was his first film.

Senate Session

The Senate continued consideration of the nomination of Priscilla Owen as a judge for the Fifth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. Judge Owen was the first of seven nominations which had been filibustered by the Democrats, the minority party. The Republicans who held a 55 vote majority had proposed changing the confirmation process through a ruling from the President of the Senate, upheld by a majority of Senate, that votes on judicial nominees not be subject to a filibuster. This would have changed Senate rules by allowing confirmation by a simple majority vote without having to invoke cloture on debate. This was popularly referred to as the "nuclear option" because of its potential impact on the normal procedure of business in the Senate.

Following a bipartisan compromise on consideration of judicial nominations to avoid the "nuclear option," a final confirmation vote passed 56 to 43.

The Senate then began consideration of the nomination of John Bolton as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

U.N. Ambassador Confirmation Hearing, Day 1

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee held a hearing on the nomination of John Bolton to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. On the first day of hearings, Mr. Bolton testified about his professional experiences, past working relationships with the diplomatic corps and intelligence agencies, and the role of the United Nations in international affairs. Among the points of contention raised by committee members critical of his nomination were past statements questioning the effectiveness of the U.N., use of faulty intelligence on international arms control and weapons development, and perceived efforts to fire intelligence analysts who had presented findings that questioned administration policies on the threat posed by Iraq and weapons of mass destruction.

During Senator Boxer's initial questioning a video was shown of a February 1994 speech in which Mr. Bolton questioned the work of the United Nations. Additionally, several protestors with pink banners opposing Mr. Bolton's nomination briefly disrupted the early part of the hearing.

The hearing was shown predominantly in a split-screen format to show both members and the nominee as questions were asked and responded to.
