Book Discussion on [The Chief Culprit]

Victor Suvorov, author of [The Chief Culprit: Stalin's Grand Design to Start WWII] (Naval Institute Press; November 14, 2008), talked about his book. He contends that Stalin intended to use Hitler's army to weaken Europe during World War II, which would have then allowed the Soviet Union to move their forces across the continent. Mr. Suvorov argues that Germany's attempt to invade the USSR was based on intelligence Hitler received that the Soviets were preparing to attack Germany.
Following his presentation, Mr. Suvorov responded to questions from the audience.

Viktor Suvorov was a Soviet military intelligence officer who defected in 1978. He is the author of numerous books, including [Aquarium: The Making of a Top Soviet Spy].

Book Discussion on [Gulag: A History ]

Ms. Applebaum talked about her book [Gulag: A History], published by Doubleday.
Nearly 30 million prisoners passed through the Soviet Union's labor camps in their more than 60 years of operation. This is the first fully documented history of the gulag, drawn on newly accessible Soviet archives as well as scores of camp memoirs and interviews with survivors to trace the gulag's origins and expansion. It describes how, largely under Stalin's watch, a regulated, centralized system of prison labor-unprecedented in scope-gradually arose out of the chaos of the Russian Revolution. Fueled by waves of arrests, this prison labor came to underpin the Soviet economy. Ms. Applebaum also reflected on why the gulag does not loom as large in the Western imagination as, for instance, the Holocaust.

Book Discussion on [Spies: The Rise and Fall of the KGB in America]

John Earl Haynes and Harvey Klehr talked about the book they wrote with Alexander Vassiliev, [Spies: The Rise and Fall of the KGB in America] (Yale University Press; May 26, 2009). Alexander Vassiliev, a former KGB officer, was given unprecedented access to Stalin-era KBG records that allowed him and his co-authors to present an unprecedented history of Soviet spy activity in America. Amongst several profiles, the authors contend that I.F. Stone had a working relationship with the KGB in the 1930s and that Alger Hiss assisted with Soviet intelligence over several years. Mr. Haynes talked about the discovery of this important source material. Professor Klehr talked about some of the significant findings they made such as who was and who was not actually a Soviet source. They then responded to questions from members of the audience.
This event was held by the International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C., at noon on Thursday, 20 August, 2009.
John Earl Haynes and Harvey Klehr are the co-authors of [The Secret World of American Communism].

Q&A with Anne Applebaum

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Anne Applebaum talked about her book, [Iron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe, 1944-1956]. She used newly opened archives and conducted interviews to examine the effects of communist totalitarianism on East Germany, Poland, and Hungary from the end of World War II to the 1956 uprisings following Stalin's death. She explained how the Soviets created institutions such as the secret police to undermine civil society and increase party control and used propaganda to shape popular opinion and reinforce communist ideology. She contrasted this with the frustration that communist leaders expressed behind closed doors when their economic and societal reforms did not achieve expected results. She also shared her own experiences in the region. She lives in London and Warsaw. Video clips included Churchill's "iron curtain" speech, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the "Song of the Party," and her husband, Radek Sikorski, the current foreign minister of Poland.

Book Discussion on [Shadow Warrior]

[Shadow Warrior: The CIA Hero of a Hundred Unknown Battles] tells the story of Felix Rodriguez. Born in Cuba in 1941, he came to the U.S. to attend high school in Pennsylvania to fulfill dreams of becoming an engineer. However, after witnessing the rise of Fidel Castro in his native land he dedicated his life to opposing communism. As a CIA operative, he was involved in the ill-fated Bay of Pigs operation. In the following years he was involved in the tracking of the revolutionary Che Guevara. In this interview Rodriguez offers his first-hand account of capturing Guevara in Bolivia and his conversation with him before Guevara's execution. Also, Rodriguez discusses his more recent testimony before the Iran-Contra committee in 1987. He states that part of his motivation for writing the book (co-authored with John Weisman) is to tell his side of the story.

Book Discussion on [Say Cheese]

Soviet dissident Vassily Aksyonov discusses his latest novel, [Say Cheese: Soviets & the Media]. It is a fictional account of a group of Soviet photographers who venture to publish their works without the approval of the Communist Party. Expelled from the Soviet Union in 1980, Aksyonov describes his novel as metaphorical: the photographers represent Metropol, the writers' group headed by Aksyonov which led to his expulsion. Trained in the Soviet Union as a medical doctor, he now is a professor of Russian literature at George Mason University. Also discussed is [In Search of Melancholy Baby: A Russian in America], a travelogue published in 1986 detailing Aksyonov's impressions of life in the United States. In addition, he discusses Soviet education and the "miraculous rise" of Mikhail Gorbachev.

Book Discussion on [The King of Vodka]

Linda Himelstein discussed the life of Pyotr Smirnov (1831-1898), a Russian serf whose vodka became world-renowned. Smirnov, barely literate, built a fortune worth $130 million but incurred criticism from the likes of Leo Tolstoy and Anton Chekhov who supported a Russian sobriety crusade. His life and his company's ascent mirrored the ever-changing political and social landscape of pre and post revolutionary Russia. His company, Smirinoff, would adapt and persevere as the world's political climate changed; during the Cold War the company would advertise itself as "White Whiskey" rather than vodka. Following her presentation, she answered questions from the audience.

Linda Himelstein is the author of [The King of Vodka: The Story of Pyotr Smirnov and the Upheaval of an Empire], published by HarperBusiness. She was formerly the legal affairs editor and later the Silicon Valley bureau chief for [BusinessWeek]. She has also worked for [The Wall Street Journal], [Legal Times], and the [San Francisco Reader].

Panelists agreed that Russia's leaders are unlikely to change their stance on the Syrian civil war. Ariel Cohen of Heritage said Russia's support for the Assad regime in Syria has changed the dynamics in the region, causing Islamist groups to view Russia as their "number one enemy." Since the start of the conflict, Russia has vetoed U.N. Security Council resolutions calling for an end to the violence. Russian arms were found aboard a Syrian commercial airliner that was forced to land by the Turkish military.

Book Discussion on [Lenin's Brain]

When the once-secret Soviet state and party archives were opened in the early 1990s, Western scholars were able to gain new insight into the inner workings of the Soviet Union. Paul Gregory reported on the contents of these archives, including the story of a state-sponsored scientific study of Lenin's brain, conducted in order to prove his genius, in [Lenin's Brain] (Hoover Institution Press). He also wrote about Stalin's criminal justice system, in which the theft of state property was punished much more severely than the theft of private property, and about the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, saying that the invasion was ordered by aging Politburo leaders who would not live to deal with the invasion's consequences. Mr. Gregory recounted stories from his book and responded to questions from the audience at the Hoover Institution.

Paul Gregory is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution. He is also an economics professor at the University of Houston and a research professor at the German Institute for Economic Research in Berlin.
