U.S. Middle East Policy

President Obama talked about U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East, focusing on political reforms after a wave of popular uprisings in Arab countries from Tunisia to Syria.
In his remarks he praised the democratic nature of the uprisings and contrasted the revolutionary sentiment with the terrorism of al-Qaida, and pledged moral and economic development support to assist the people of the region. He also called for a solution to the impasse in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, specifically calling for a recognition of a sovereign Palestine along the 1967 borders. He remarked, "the status quo is unsustainable, and Israel too must act boldly to advance a lasting peace," and that "Palestinians will never realize their independence by denying the right of Israel to exist."

He discussed the work and views of a number of other scholars, including author Joan Peters, Israeli historian Benny Morris, and Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz.
Book Discussion on [Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid]

Former President Jimmy Carter talked about his book [Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid], published by Simon and Schuster. In his book he argues that the only way for Israel to achieve lasting security is to withdraw from occupied territory and revert to internationally-recognized boundaries. At this event former President Carter summarized the book and addressed issues surrounding its public reception, including his use of the word "apartheid," his statements regarding Jews and the American media, his opinions on the responsibility of Palestinian leadership, and his decision not to debate Harvard Professor Alan Dershowitz at the event. He also apologized for a sentence in the book that implies Israel is responsible for stopping Palestinian acts of terror, and challenged Brandeis University students and professors to travel to the region to determine whether his claims regarding human rights abuses are justified. President Carter responded to audience members' questions.

Immediately following the event and former President Carter's departure, Alan Dershowitz was allowed to respond to points made by former President Carter regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Mr. Dershowitz challenged several points made in the book, calling former President Carter's synopsis of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict overly simplistic and claiming that the former president changes his approach depending on his audience. He also questioned Carter's influence on Yasser Arafat's decision to reject the terms offered at Camp David in 2000. Then Mr. Dershowitz debated with students in the audience on topics including the influence of Israeli checkpoints on religious fundamentalism, the role of Iran in the Middle East, and the impact of Israeli settlements on the peace process.

The program contains a portion with poor audio quality at the start of Mr. Dershowitz's remarks due to technical problems in the auditorium.

Mitchell Bard argues that while the Israel lobby is often charged with overly influencing U.S. foreign policy goals in the Middle East, the real power lies with the Arab lobby. U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice said the vote places "further obstacles in the path of peace." Israel and the United states were against the resolution because they said it conflicts with peace deal negotiations.
