The reading of the names was paused six times, to mark the time when each plane hit the towers, the times when each tower fell, and the moments when one plane struck the Pentagon and Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Senator Arlen Specter Oral History Interview, Part 5

Arlen Specter left the United States Senate in 2011 after a 30 year career. Soon afterwards, he sat down for a series of extended oral history interviews with the Pennsylvania Cable Network. Specter reflects on events that take him from his Russian immigrant roots to his involvement in some of this country's most momentous events - from his work on the Warren Commission investigating President Kennedy's assassination to the Senate impeachment trial of President Clinton. We're airing a selection of these interviews here on American History TV. In this excerpt, Specter talks about President Clinton's impeachment, the September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, and the subsequent Patriot Act and Iraq War. This program is about 90 minutes.

Smithsonian September 11 Collections

In December, 2001, Congress designated the Smithsonian American History Museum as the national repository of September 11 collections. The exhibit "September 11: Remembrance and Reflection" displayed more than 50 objects recovered from New York, the Pentagon, Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and recent acquisitions from the Transportation Security Administration in a nine-day open exhibit program. At a news conference at a donation ceremony for the TSA artifacts, officials gave the press a preview of the artifacts.
Also shown was a video clip of an interview with Rear Admiral Dave Thomas, whose uniform is in the exhibit.
