Q&A with Bob Ney

Representative Bob Ney (R-OH) talked about his memoir, [Sideswiped: Lessons Learned Courtesy of the Hit Men of Capitol Hill]. He discussed his eleven years in Congress and being sent to serve for 30 months at the Federal Corrections Facility in Morgantown, West Virginia. He was in prison for 12 months and was released to a 12-step alcohol rehabilitation program in Columbus, Ohio for five additional months. He detailed entering prison and the experience of going from a "lawmaker to a law breaker." He related coming to Washington, D.C., with the best of intentions, but was instead sidetracked by the enticement of money and an addiction to alcohol. He suggested that little had changed on Capitol Hill with respect to lobbying members of Congress and the lure of money in politics.

Q&A with Bill Steigerwald

Journalist and author Bill Steigerwald talks about his book, [Dogging Steinbeck: Discovering America and Exposing the Truth About "Travels with Charley"], in which the author challenges the authenticity of Nobel Prize recipient and author John Steinbeck's 1962 book, [Travels With Charley]. Mr. Steigerwald retraced Steinbeck's cross country journey 50 years later. He wrote about it at the time in a blog for the [Pittsburgh Post-Gazette], and kept a video log of many of the highlights of the trip. Mr. Steigerwald contends that Steinbeck took so many liberties with the truth in the original book that it should not be classified as non-fiction. Mr. Steigerwald also said that many of the encounters Steinbeck describes were simply made up by the author. Mr. Steigerwald discussed his motivations for writing the book, and described many of the hurdles he overcame on the journey to self publication of the book.

Author Frederick Kaufman talked his book, [Bet the Farm: How Food Stopped Being Food], on the influence of the financial industry, large food corporation, and federal policy on food as a form of commerce. He argued rising food prices around the world resulted from food being packaged and sold as a commodity on international trading markets.
Homeownership and the Economy

Randal O'Toole talked about his book, [American Nightmare: How Government Undermines the Dream of Home Ownership], in which he asserts that excessive regulations have caused a decline in the United States' global ranking in homeowership rates. He blames federal, state and local policies for the collapse of the housing industry, rather than the banking industry and other factors. Some of the examples he cited were land use restrictions and permitting processes. Among his comments he said that the "'war on urban sprawl'" was an effort "by the middle class to make war on the working class to reduce working class homeownership rates." He also responded to telephone calls and electronic communications.

Thomas Ricks talked about military ethics and leadership. During the preceding year a number of generals and admirals had been involved in legal and ethical issues, and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta had ordered an investigation into the reasons behind the problems. Of the controversies surrounding Afghanistan war leaders former CIA Director General David Petraeus and General John Allen, Mr. Ricks stated that the real scandal was not their behavior with women but rather the high turnover rate among the U.S. military leaders in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. He stressed the need for a better process in finding competent military leadership, saying, "The media, the Congress, lack sufficient military experience to really know what good generalship looks like."
Mr. Ricks is the author of [The Generals: American Military Command from World War II to Today].

Q&A with Douglas Brinkley

Rice University History Professor Douglas Brinkley talked about his new biography of long-time CBS "Evening News" anchor Walter Cronkite, who was often referred to as "the most trusted man in America." [Cronkite] chronicles his early life in Missouri and Texas and his United Press wire service reporting from the front lines of World War II. He shared stories of Cronkite's rise through the ranks of CBS News, including the task of anchoring the 1952 political conventions and the expansion of the CBS Evening News from 15 to 30 minutes in 1963. Brinkley suggests that while Cronkite's Evening News broadcasts aimed for political objectivity, his radio commentaries were what he terms "left leaning." Brinkley describes Cronkite's retirement at age 65 from the nightly newscast and his subsequent regret in choosing Dan Rather as his replacement. Brinkley discussed his research methods, which included access to Cronkite's private papers and interviews with over 150 people.

Thomas Mann and Norm Ornstein talked about their book, [It's Even Worse Than It Looks: How the American Constitutional System Collided with the New Politics of Extremism.] In the book they examined the adversarial partisan behavior of Washington, D.C., policy makers that has left a majority-rule system dysfunctional. They placed much of the blame on Republican Party ideological extremism. Mr. Ornstein said in the interview that Democrats were not lacking blame for the situation. However, he also said Democrats were willing to work with President George W. Bush despite the contentious 2000 election and the Supreme Court decision on [Gore v. Bush]. In contrast, he cited Robert Draper's book that told of tea party movement Republican leaders meeting the night of President Obama's inauguration and agreeing to oppose anything the president proposed. They also responded to telephone calls and electronic communications.
