Book Discussion on [Outcasts United]

Warren St. John talked about his book [Outcasts United: A Refugee Team, an American Town], published by Spiegel and Grau. In the book he explores the soccer program led by Luma Mufleh in Clarkston, Georgia, for refugee boys from war-torn countries in Africa, the Balkans, and the Middle East. They are highly disadvantaged because of hostility by residents of Clarkston that disapprove of the government moving refugees into their town, poor funding, and children who are highly traumatized by their violent past. Despite these challenges, the program has shown effectiveness in integrating the refugees and keeping them in school and out of gangs. Following his remarks, Mr. St. John answered questions from members of the audience.

Situation in Sudan

A panel discussion was held on the continuation of violence in Sudan and violations of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) by the National Congress Party.

The CPA, signed on January 9, 2005, tentatively brought an end to more than two decades of war between the Sudan People's Liberation Army in the south and the forces of the Sudanese government in the north. But since that time, the National Congress Party (formerly known as the National Islamic Front) in Khartoum has failed to honor some of the key provisions of the CPA, and has supported militia-based violence against Southern Sudan and the other marginalized areas such as the Nuba Mountains.

Panelists discussed how to save the peace agreement, what effect the lack of implementation of the CPA has had on civil society, and what the United States government can do to ensure peace. Following the discussion panelists answered questions from members of the audience.
