      <title>North Korea and Human Rights</title>
      <description>Shin Dong-hyuk was interviewed by Christian Caryl about his life in a North Korean internment camp, where he was born. He talked about the abuse of prisoners in the camp, including denial of food, and how he and the other prisoners motivated themselves to survive. He also talked about the difficulty of sharing his experiences and explaining the camp to outsiders and criticized western countries for not interfering in genocide. He also answered questions from the audience. Shin spoke in Korean with consecutive translation by an on-stage translator.
"America's Role in Promoting Democracy &amp; Human Rights" was a session of the forum "The Price of Greatness: The Next Four Years of Foreign Policy," held at the Newseum.</description>

In her remarkss she said the "world is sliding backwards" even as progress was being made on political freedom in places like the Middle East. During the audience question portion of the program, she was asked about recent allegations that her long-time aide Huma Abedin had ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. She responded that such charges had "no place in politics" and praised Republicans who spoke out in defense of Ms. Abedin.
Earlier in the day the State Department released its report on the status of religious freedom around the world.</description>

      <title>Human Rights Abuses in China</title>
      <description>Witnesses testified at an emergency hearing on recent developments concerning Chinese blind dissident Chen Guangcheng, who escaped from his 19 month house arrest to the U.S. Embassy in China. They also talked about his legal advocacy work in China and human rights abuses in the country. During the hearing Chen Guangcheng spoke by telephone, through an interpreter, to the hearing and requested a meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
After escape from home confinement, Chen met with the U.S. ambassador and administration officials at the American Embassy in Beijing and received medical treatment. After staying at the embassy for six days, U.S. and Chinese officials agreed to let him live safely in China with his family. Hours after Chen left the U.S. Embassy for a hospital checkup, he informed the U.S. that he and his family felt threatened and wanted to go abroad.</description>

      <title>Uganda's Joseph Kony and the Lord's Resistance Party</title>
      <description>Two Ugandans who were abducted by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) testified before a Senate subcommittee on African affairs. One of them Jacob Acaye, was made famous by the Kony video released by an NGO (non-governmental agency) earlier in 2012. Senators also heard from State and Defense Department officials who explained U.S. efforts in the central African region affected by the LRA. The LRA was known for kidnapping women and children for use as sex slaves and child soldiers.</description>

      <title>Q&amp;A with Katrina Lantos Swett</title>
      <description>Katrina Lantos Swett talked about the Lantos Foundation for Human Rights and Justice, and her late father, Representative Tom Lantos (D-CA), who founded the bipartisan Congressional Human Rights Caucus. She told the story of her parents' escape from German labor camps and eventual immigration to the U.S. from Hungary. Other topics included her concerns over Russian leadership pulling the country away from democracy, and her admiration for the Dalai Lama's contributions to human rights. She discussed her failed campaign to represent New Hampshire's 2nd Congressional district in 2010, her husband Richard Swett's service as ambassador to Denmark and representation of New Hampshire's 2nd district for two terms, and raising seven children.
Katrina Lantos Swett teaches foreign policy at Tufts University. She received her undergraduate degree from Yale University, her J.D. from the University of California, and her Ph.D. in History from the University of Southern Denmark.</description>

      <title>Panel on War Crimes Tribunals</title>
      <description>Panelists discussed war crimes tribunals, both past and present, and if the legal infrastructure the world's leading democracies have struggled to establish since the Nuremberg trials of 1945-46 is finally able to hold accountable those responsible for genocide, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity. They also responded to questions from members of the audience. Mr. Abramowitz moderated.
William Shawcross is a founding member of the Article 19 and the International Crisis Group. His father, Lord Hartley Shawcross, served as lead prosecutor for Great Britain during the Nuremberg Trials. A clip was shown of him at Nuremberg. David Scheffer participated in establishing the International Criminal Court when he served as United States ambassador-at-large for War Crimes Issues. He also participated in the creation of the war crimes tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda. 
"In Search of Accountability: Justice After Nuremberg" was held at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.</description>

Dick Lobo moderated a roundtable discussion with scholars and Operation Pedro Pan participants about the legacy of the largest recorded exodus of unaccompanied minors in the Western Hemisphere. The panelists also responded to questions from members of the audience.

      <title>Book Discussion on [The Rape of Nanking]</title>
      <description>Ms. Chang talked about her book, [The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II], published by Basic Books. The book documents the atrocities visited upon the people of Nanking by the Japanese military during the early years of World War II. She describes Nanking as a laboratory in which Japanese soldiers were taught to slaughter unarmed, unresisting civilians, and that they used these tactics later throughout Asia. Ms. Chang argues that the Japanese government should pay reparations and apologize for its army's actions. Some of the graphic photographs in the book were displayed.
Ms. Chang is a journalist.</description>

      <description>A discussion was held on Nazi crimes during World War II and the Nuremberg trials. Ken Hechler was a combat historian who interviewed Nazi leaders. Douglas Neckers is a scientist concerned about the involvement of scientists in war. Eli Rosenbaum has been a "Nazi hunter" for thirty years. Topics included concepts of justice, how people become involved in war crimes, and deterrence. Gregory Peterson moderated. They responded to questions from students in the audience.
This was part of the "International Justice Past and Present" session of the Summer Institute for Human Rights &amp; Genocide Studies, where students met people who had lived through significant historical events. This July 21, 2010, session was held at the Robert H. Jackson Center in Jamestown, N.Y.</description>
