The Berlin Wall

The guest talked about the political, social, and historical significance of the construction and the dismantling of the Berlin Wall. She said that East Germany pressured the Soviet Union to build the wall, which was designed to keep people from fleeing communist East Germany to democratic West Germany. Construction began August 13, 1961, and the wall was torn down starting November 9, 1989. Ms. Harrison responded to audience telephone calls, faxes, and electronic mail. Pictures and video clips related to the Berlin Wall were also shown.

This was third in a series on anniversaries of historical events.

Interview with Peter Zimmerman

Peter Zimmerman traced the history of the East German struggle against the communist government and the reunification process. Mr. Zimmerman was one of the "Leipzig Six" and was heavily involved in informing against his colleagues at Leipzig University to the East German government and was a leading proponent of reform of the East German economy. His remarks are heavily religious and demonstrate how the intelligence system permeated the lives of all the citizens of East Germany. He has been suspended from teaching at the university and is under investigation for his activities.

Changes in East Germany

The prime minister's remarks concerned the unification of Germany and what alliance a united Germany would belong to: NATO or the Warsaw Pact. The prime minster's visit was the first and probably the last visit to the White House by an East German prime minister. The Germans were scheduled to vote on a parliament as early as January 1991. These elections could effectively end the division of the country. The previous week President Bush met with Helmut Kohl to discuss the position of a united Germany in NATO. This issue had been one that Gorbachev had opposed, but he was supposedly reconciling himself to the idea. The prime minister's remarks are translated.

[Wall: The Inside Story] Part 4

Mr. Wyden discussed the history of the Berlin Wall and its ramifications in the series of four interviews. Mr. Wyden is a Jew who left Berlin with his family before the beginning of World War II. He said that he took his children, including Rep. Ron Wyden (D-OR) who appears in the last interview, to see the wall and they were heavily affected by it. His book was published before the wall came down, but he discussed the German environment now that the wall is down. He said there is an "absence of fear" where things become possible. He foresaw "prosperity, jobs, cars, refrigerators, telephones, decent schools" for the East Germans.
