      <title>Book Discussion on [The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain]</title>
      <description>Peter Sis talked about his illustrated book, [The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain] (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2007). This Caldecott Honor Book for ages 8 and older is an account of his childhood in Cold War-era Prague, Czechoslovakia. Peter Sis described his life growing up in communist Prague. He detailed his career as a film animator, an artist, and an author and illustrator of children's books. He told the story of how he became an illustrator for the [New York Times], and how Jackie Kennedy Onassis edited his book [The Three Golden Keys].
This event was part of Loudoun County, Virginia's "One Book, One Community" program. The county encouraged all residents to read Peter Sis's book [The Wall] and then sponsored book discussions and appearances by the author.</description>

      <title>President Obama on Weapons Proliferation</title>
      <description>President Obama spoke in Hradcanske Namesti Square about the proliferation of nuclear weapons and his hopes that European nations would join the United States in confronting the threat. He further said that the United States had a moral responsibility to lead because no other country has used a nuclear weapon in war.
 
 He also responded to the launch of a North Korean missile saying that the launch "broke the rules again" and was a provocative action which demanded a response by the international community.</description>

      <description>Ms. Vella talked about the book she co-authored with Radomir Luza, [The Hitler Kiss:  A Czech Memoir of Resistance], published by Louisiana State University Press. She talks about Luza's involvement in the Czech Resistance. Luza's father was a general in the Czech army when the Nazis invaded Czechoslovakia during World War II. General Luza went into hiding while Radomir Luza spent some time in a Gestapo prison. Shortly after his release, Radomir Luza joined his father in hiding and organized the largest Czech resistance network.</description>

      <description>The House agreed to the Murtha motion to close the conference committee meetings on H.R. 5803, Defense appropriations, to the public. The House agreed to the conference report on S. 2104, amending the Civil Rights Act of 1974. The House passed H.R. 5422, appropriations for intelligence activities, after agreeing to the Solarz amendment and rejecting the Dellums and Boxer amendments. The Solarz amendment sets restrictions on the distribution of lethal aid to UNITA. The Dellums amendment sought to prohibit covert aid in 1991 to UNITA. The Boxer amendment sought to require the House and Senate Intelligence Committees to approve any U.S. covert activities. The House passed H.J. Res. 649 by a voice vote to extend Most Favored Nation status to Czechoslovakia.</description>

      <title>Commencement Address</title>
      <description>Mr. Dubcek inspired the democratic reforms in Czechoslovakia in 1968. These reforms, called "socialism with a human face", led to the Warsaw pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in August, 1968. Shortly after, Mr. Dubcek was arrested, taken to Moscow and expelled from the Communist Party. Last fall he became chairman of his country's parliament following a revolution in November. This is his first trip to the United States, during which he is receiving an honorary doctorate degree from American University. Professor Lustitg served as Mr. Dubcek's translator.</description>
