The Communicators with Carlos Garcia

Carlos Garcia-Perez talked about U.S. government-sponsored broadcasts to Cuba. Radio broadcasts into the communist-ruled country began in 1985, television broadcasts in 1990 , and they are known as Radio and TV Marti. The broadcasts are jammed by the Cuban government and some in Congress argue that the future of TV Marti in particular is in question because viewership is small, compared with U.S. broadcasts to other countries, and news from other Western-based news operations appears to be available.
This week "The Communicators" airs the third in a series about U.S. Government-sponsored broadcasts to other countries. These broadcasts are services of the Broadcasting Board of Governors.

April 2011 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, one of the greatest American foreign policy disasters of the twentieth century. Professor Irwin Gellman talked about U.S.-Cuba relations, and the actions taken by both Presidents Kennedy and Eisenhower. "The Coming of the Bay of Pigs: Myth and Reality" was a pubic lecture presented by Phi Alpha Theta, The History Honor Society, in the Business Administration Building of the University of Central Florida, with the assistance of the office of the dean of the College of Arts and Humanities in association with the UCF Alumni Association, the UCF Student Government Association, the UCF History Department, and the Rollins College History Department.

Book Discussion on [Guantanamo, USA]

Stephen Schwab, former senior analyst for the CIA's South America Division, presents a history of America's military base in Guantanamo, Cuba. Residing on 45 square miles, Mr. Schwab recalls the establishment of the base following the Spanish-American War as America's first foreign naval base. Initially granted a lease in perpetuity by Cuba, the Castro government insists that the base violates international law and according to the author refuses to bank the rent paid by the United States. Mr. Schwab examines the different uses of the base throughout its history from using its location to prevent European expansion in the Caribbean to a convoy hub during WWII and it's current usage as a coast guard station, base for counter narcotics operations, and a prison. Stephen Schwab discussed his book at Left Bank Books in St. Louis.
