      <title>Head Start Program</title>
      <description>Luis Burguillo talked about the reauthorization of the Head Start Program by Congress. The House passed the bill (H.R. 1429) on Wednesday, November 14, 2007, by a vote of 381-36. President Bush is expected to sign the act even though it does not include language allowing religious groups to hire and fire employees based on their religious beliefs. The program has not been reauthorized since 2003. Mr. Burguillo responded to telephone calls and electronic mail.</description>

      <title>Head Start Program</title>
      <description>Ms. Golden talked about the Head Start program, its funding and a recent GAO report on the program. When she was commissioner for Children, Youth, and Families and then assistant secretary for Children and Families for the Department of Health and Human Services she was responsible for the Head Start program. The previous Tuesday, Ms. Golden testified before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce as well as the Education and Early Childhood Development Subcommittee of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. She also responded to telephone calls, faxes and e-mail from viewers.</description>

      <title>Head Start Funding</title>
      <description>Secretary Shalala talked about the positive improvements that the Clinton administration has made to strengthen Head Start. Vice President Gore spoke about the importance of quality preschool for working parents. He announced that an additional 7,000 children will be placed in Early Headstart which will be the beginning of increasing the number of children in Headstart. He also mentioned that the government will put more than 250,000 dollars in improving the quality and number of Head Start teachers.</description>

      <title>Head Start Legislation Signing</title>
      <description>In a White House East Room ceremony this afternoon, President Clinton signed the Head Start Reauthorization Bill. The Bill contains new provisions to meet needs of families with infants and toddlers from birth to age 3. The President explained that, as a result of this Bill, Head Start will go from serving 621,000 children in 1992 to about 840,000 in 1995.</description>

      <description>President Bush spoke briefly to children and parents at the Emily Harns Head Start Center in Catonsville, Maryland. The purpose of the president's visit was to announce his proposed $600 million increase for Head Start, a federal pre-school program for children. The proposal would provide for the largest increase in Head Start's budget since the program was launched 27 years ago. Democrats in Congress are also calling for a jump in Head Start spending. Secretary of Health and Human Services Louis Sullivan and Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander were present and were introduced by President Bush.</description>
