      <description>America and the Courts featured discussions with U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts. 
 
 On Thursday, July 20, 2006, Chief Justice John Roberts talked about the U.S. Constitution at the Supreme Court. The interview was part of a C-SPAN Classroom project designed to interest middle and high school students in the Constitution and will be used as a teaching tool for educators.
 
 
 On Thursday, July 13, 2006, Chief Justice John Roberts participated in a "Conversation with the Chief Justice."  The event featured an informal conversation on the Constitution and the rule of law with Chief Justice Roberts, who attended the Ninth Circuit conference for the first time. It was held in Huntington Beach, California. Participating in the conversation with Chief Justice Roberts were Chief District Judge Robert S. Lasnik, program chair for the conference, Magistrate Judge Sandra M. Snyder, chair of the Conference Executive Committee, and Peg Carew Toledo, Esq., chair of the Ninth Circuit Lawyer Representatives Coordinating Committee.</description>

      <title>Abortion and the Supreme Court</title>
      <description>Professors Alvare and Pillard participated in a roundtable discussion to examine the history of the U.S. Supreme Court's abortion decisions. They discussed the effect the first new justices on the bench since 1994 would have on future decisions and the confirmation hearing for appeals court Judge Samuel Alito.
 
 The program included audio clips from the oral arguments in four Supreme Court cases with still pictures of the participants:  [Roe v. Wade, Webster v. Reproductive Health Services, Planned Parenthood v. Casey], and [Stenberg v. Carhart].</description>

During the luncheon of the first day, Senator Clinton told the audience that she had just come from voting "no" on the confirmation of John Roberts as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. She also discussed alleged Republican corruption, politics in New York, and the replacement for retiring Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
 
 Former Governor Dean (D-VT), who talked about possible candidates for the 2008 elections, introduced Senator Clinton. He stated that he would not run in the next presidential election.</description>

 On Thursday, September 29, 2005 John Roberts was sworn in as the 17th Chief Justice of the United States at the White House. He was confirmed by a vote of 78 to 22 with the support of all 55 Senate Republicans, 22 Democrats and Independent Senator Jeffords. Associate Justice John Paul Stevens, the longest serving member of the U.S. Supreme Court, swore him in.
 
 Also shown was a political ad created by Progress for America commenting on the confirmation process and urging a non-partisan confirmation for the next nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court.
 
 On Friday, September 30, 2005 [New York Times] reporter Judith Miller spoke to reporters after her testimony before a grand jury on an investigation into the leak of a CIA operative's name by White House officials. She was freed Thursday, September 29, 2005 after being jailed for 85 days at a Virginia federal detention center.
 
 On April 30, 2005 Fourth Circuit Judge Harvie Wilkinson spoke about the legacy of Chief Justice John Marshall. He discussed the fourth U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice's life, decisions, and impact on both the nation and the courts. The John Marshall Foundation hosted this event in Richmond, Virginia.</description>

      <title>Roberts Swearing-In as Chief Justice</title>
      <description>President Bush acknowledged the seven current Justices who were in the audience, as well as members of his cabinet, members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and other government dignitaries. The president talked about the historic occasion of swearing in a new Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. He praised Judge Roberts as "a man with an astute mind and a kind heart." 
 Justice John Paul Stevens administered the oath of office, after which the 17th Chief Justice, John Roberts, thanked President Bush and others, and talked about the nomination process and his determination to support and defend the Constitution.
 
 It has been 19 years since Chief Justice Rehnquist was sworn in.</description>
