America and the Courts

America and the Courts featured Supreme Court attorneys' news conferences and Professor Patterson on [Brown v. Board of Education].

In the first segment, following an introduction by Mr. Savage, attorneys talked with reporters about oral arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of [Rush Prudential HMO v. Debra Moran]. The case questioned whether states could require health maintenance organizations (HMO) to submit medical necessity decisions to an independent review board. The lower court ruled the HMO should pay for a surgery based on the state's review and medical expert opinion.

In the second segment, Professor Patterson talked about the [Brown v. Board of Education] case, its impact on the civil rights movement, and its potentially troubling legacy.
