      <description>The Senate Judiciary Committee met in executive session to vote on several items including the John Roberts nomination to be Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Senators made 10-minute statements on Judge Roberts' qualifications, their impressions of his testimony before the committee and intended support or opposition to his confirmation before the final vote. The vote was 13 to 5 in favor of confirmation.
 
 The hearings were presented with graphics at the left of the screen indicating how each senator intended to vote on confirmation.</description>

 On the third day of questioning, held the morning of the fourth day of the hearings, Judge Roberts responded to questions from Senators Leahy, Kennedy, Feinstein, Feingold, Schumer, and Durbin. He addressed topics including the importance of judicial precedents, the right to privacy, gender discrimination, affirmative action, executive power, habeas reform, disabilities, and the philosophy of original intent.
 
 Senators were allotted 15-20 minutes of questioning during the daylong hearing and were often shown alongside Judge Roberts in a split-screen format.</description>

      <description>Outside of the Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing room, Senator Schumer and hearing witnesses spoke to reporters about United States Supreme Court nominee Judge John Roberts. 
 
 Ms. Thernstrom criticized the Democratic attitude during the hearings, saying that they should have attended more of the hearings. Senator Schumer discussed the nominee's responses to questions about such issues as privacy. He felt that Judge Roberts' answers were insufficient. Following his remarks, Senator Schumer responded to questions from reporters.
 
 Ms. Long and Mr. Coffin spoke about Judge Roberts' responses and commended him for refusing to answer questions relating to cases that may appear before the court. Ms. Smeal and Ms. Gandy criticized the responses of the nominee as well as the proceedings themselves.</description>

      <description>The Senate Judiciary Committee held a confirmation hearing on the appointment of Judge John Roberts to the U.S. Supreme Court seat vacated after the death of Chief Justice William Rehnquist. On the first day of questioning by members of the committee of President Bush's, Judge John Roberts responded to inquiries on a number of subjects including the role of the judiciary, his judicial philosophy, and his past legal experience. Among the topics he addressed were the importance of judicial precedents, the right to privacy, reproductive rights and the law, civil rights issues, and the philosophy of original intent.
 
 Each member was allotted thirty minutes of questioning during the day-long hearing. During the questioning members and witness were often shown in a split-screen format.</description>
