      <title>Role and Mission of the U.S. Secret Service</title>
      <description>Ronald Kessler, author of [In the President's Secret Service], discussed the history, role, and mission of the U.S. Secret Service. Topics included President Obama's appointment earlier in the week of Julia Pierson as the first female director of the U.S. Secret Service and possible agency reforms following the April 2012 disclosures that Secret Service agents had hired prostitutes in Cartagena, Colombia, prior to President Obama's trip there. He also told anecdotes about presidents and their families as he responded to telephone calls and electronic communications.</description>

      <title>Book Discussion on [The Kennedy Detail]</title>
      <description>Gerald Blaine, Lisa McCubbin, and Clint Hill talked about their book [The Kennedy Detail: JFKs Secret Service Agents Break Their Silence]. In this book, for the first time, a member of President Kennedy's Secret Service detail reveals the inside story of the assassination on November 22, 1963, the weeks and days that led to it and its aftermath. Gerald Blaine talked about what inspired him to write this book after decades of silence from all of the Secret Service agents involved. Lisa McCubbin talked about doing research for the book. Clint Hill talked about why he contributed to the book.
They were interviewed at the 33rd Annual National Press Club Book Fair and Authors' Night, a fundraiser for the Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library and The SEED Foundation held Tuesday, November 9, 2010 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.</description>

      <title>Kennedy Assassination:  Winston Lawson, Part 1</title>
      <description>Winston Lawson talked about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Winston Lawson was the Secret Service agent in charge of security in Dallas, and did ten days of advance work before the presidential party's arrival. He rode in the lead car in the motorcade, just ahead of President Kennedy's car. 
 
 This is the first of two parts. In this part he talked about his experiences on the presidential detail and the security preparations for Dallas.
 
 This oral history was recorded on September 5, 2003, at the 6th Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, Dallas, for the 40th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

      <title>Book Discussion on [The Art of Making Money]</title>
      <description>Jason Kersten appeared on the "Diane Rehm Show" to talk about his book [The Art of Making Money: The Story of a Master Counterfeiter] (Gotham; June 11, 2009). The book recounts the criminal exploits of Art Williams, a counterfeiter who by using over-the-counter materials was able to forge the "most secure bill ever created," a one-hundred dollar bill known as the 1996 New Note. Art Williams produced millions of counterfeit dollars over fourteen years until being caught by the Secret Service. The author talked about what led Art Williams to crime, how he came to counterfeit the supposedly secure 1996 New Note, and what led to his downfall. He also responded to telephone calls and electronic communications from listeners.</description>

      <title>Mortgage Loan Modification Fraud</title>
      <description>Officials announced a new multi-agency crackdown on mortgage loan modification fraud and foreclosure rescue scams. They spoke about increased efforts to identify fraud suspects for civil and criminal investigation and issue an advisory to help financial firms flag questionable modification schemes for law enforcement. Attorney General Holder said the FBI had more than doubled the number of agents investigating mortgage fraud cases and created a national mortgage fraud team. They also responded to questions from reporters.</description>

      <title>Book Discussion on [A Nation of Counterfeiters]</title>
      <description>Stephen Mihm talked about his book [A Nation of Counterfeiters: Capitalists, Con Men, and the Making of the United States], published by Harvard University Press. He describes the U.S. system of currency prior to the Civil War when there was no single national currency. Organizations such as individual banks and state legislatures circulated their own money. Mr. Mihm relays that by 1860 there were over 10,000 different kinds of currency in the U.S. This chaotic system was an environment rife with counterfeiters but also with currency without sufficient backing. He showed some slides during his presentation and then he responded to questions from members of the audience.</description>

      <title>Terrorism Financing</title>
      <description>Undersecretary Levey spoke about components for fighting and winning the financial efforts to combat terrorism. He talked about the way terrorism networks raised money and ways the Treasury Department has protected the integrity of America's financial system. Undersecretary Levey also referred to a letter from Ayman al-Zawahri telling Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, "I'm out of money," saying there was evidence that tough measures to curb terrorism funding have made it for terror networks to collect, transfer, and store funds. Following his remarks, Undersecretary Levey responded to questions and comments from members of the audience.</description>

      <title>Book Discussion on [Riding With Reagan]</title>
      <description>Mr. Barletta talked about his book [Riding With Reagan:  From The White House to the Ranch], published by Citadel Press. John Barletta worked as a U.S. Secret Service Agent for nearly twenty years beginning in 1974. When Ronald Reagan took office in 1981, Mr. Barletta headed the equestrian team and later was assigned head of the Reagan Ranch detail. The book documents the author's experiences protecting former President Reagan while in office and in the years after. Mr. Barletta was an experienced equestrian and he utilized these skills when he rode with the former president and first lady on their ranch in California, Camp David, and Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C. His book relates both personal stories of his interactions with the president and security incidents. Following his remarks he answered questions from the audience.
 
 Mr. Bartlett spoke at a celebration of what would have been President Reagan's 94th birthday held by the Young America's Foundation at the Carriage Museum in Santa Barbara. The Foundation is renovating Rancho del Cielo as a presidential center.</description>

In the book, the author relates his experiences as a collection agent for the Internal Revenue Service. Mr. Yancey talks about how a revenue officer collects overdue taxes from delinquent taxpayers. The book covers the history of the Secret Service from its earliest days to its most recent actions following 9-11. Professor Melanson discussed the more famous incidents involving the Secret Service, including the assassination of President Kennedy and the attempted assassination of President Reagan. He also talked about the response of the Secret Service to special prosecutor Kenneth Starr's subpoenas to have agents testify in the investigation of President Clinton and suggests ways to improve the organization. Following his presentation, Professor Melanson answered questions from members of the audience.</description>

      <title>Airplane Crash Briefing</title>
      <description>Mr. Noble reported that there will be two phases of inquiry into the plane crash that took place at the White House early this morning. First, the Secret Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Federal Aviation Administration, National Transportation Safety Board, and Metropolitan Police Department have combined their resources to investigate this incident and pursue any appropriate law enforcement action. Second, he (Noble) and Eljay Bowron, Director of the Secret Service, will lead a thorough review of the procedures used to protect the President and First Family in such incidents. This review will be coordinated with the White House and all relevant federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. The review will be completed in 90 days. Following the briefing, Mr. Meyer Mr. Griffin and he took media questions on the air crash. They were unable to answer many questions from the press for security reasons.</description>
