      <title>Book Discussion on [Military District of Washington]</title>
      <description>This film shows the many military activities around Washington, D.C., as posts in the Military District of Washington were visited. Activities shown included an arrival ceremony, parades, bands, the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, ceremonial color guards at historic Mount Vernon, the "Old Guard" Caisson platoon of the 3rd Infantry at Fort Meyer, and anti-aircraft batteries in the surrounding suburbs responding to an alert. Sergeant McQueen interviewed various soldiers about their duties and the traditions of the regiment. A drill also showed the tanks of the 3rd Infantry rolling past the Pentagon and the men of the 2nd Battalion moving to strategic positions.
"Military District of Washington" was an episode of the television series "The Big Picture," produced for the United States Army Office of the Chief of Information by the Army Pictorial Center in the 1950s and '60s.</description>

      <description>D.K.R. Crosswell recalls the life of American General Walter Bedell Smith (1895-1961). General Smith, Dwight Eisenhower's chief of staff from 1942 to 1945, served in the military for over forty years and played a significant part in the Allied strategy in World War II. Mr. Crosswell examines General Smith's military career, from a 16-year-old private in the Indiana National Guard to a four-star general that Winston Churchill called the "American Bulldog."  His postwar career included service as the U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union, director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and undersecretary of state. Mr. Crosswell showed slides during his presentation, after which he responded to questions from members of the audience. He discussed his book at the annual Association of the U.S. Army Meeting held at the Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

      <title>Army Suicide Prevention</title>
      <description>Army Vice Chief of Staff Peter Chiarelli spoke with reporters and answered questions following the release of a 15-month study of the increasing rate of suicides in the force. In his remarks he said that the overall Army suicide rate had been driven up by the 21 percent of suicides committed by soldiers with multiple deployments, but acknowledged that 79 percent of Army suicides were by service members who had one or no deployments. He also talked about recommendations in the report for tightened enlistment standards, expanded mental health screening, a confidential alcohol treatment program, and better coordination between primary care physicians and mental health counselors. Several questions also focused on portions of the report that found surprising instances of drug an alcohol abuse among the armed forces.</description>

      <description>Greg Jaffee talked about the book he wrote with David Cloud, [The Fourth Star: Four Generals and the Epic Struggle for the Future of the United States Army] (Crown; October 13, 2009). 
The book profiles four generals who joined the Army in the wake of its defeat in Vietnam, how the Army helped shape their lives, and how they helped shape the Army and the Iraq War. Generals George Casey, Peter Chiarelli, John Abizaid, and David Petraeus played crucial roles in the planning and execution of the current war in Iraq. He talked about the life lessons these generals brought to the war. Among his recommendations was a broader education for young officers. He responded to questions from members of the audience. 
This talk was part of the Command and General Staff College's Marshal Hall Lecture series, held Novebmber 4, 2009, at 12:30 p.m. CT at Fort Leavenworth.
Greg Jaffe is the Pentagon correspondent at the [Washington Post] and previously held the same position at the [Wall Street Journal] where he was part of the team that won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for national reporting.</description>
